Me!? An Office Lady!?

If you are following my twitter you have probably seen that I managed to get the new job I wanted. I will now be working 8:30am - 5pm Monday through Friday. (Although I will still work every other Saturdays at my old job too for a little while longer.)

The thing that makes this new job so great is that it is only 15 minutes away from my house! I will no longer be spending 3 hours a day in transit! (Also it pays more...) So now I can wear more of the fashions I love. I can spend more time working on my blog and connecting to you lovely readers. And I can work on outfits for conventions and meet-ups.

Plus I have my own office. I'm an office lady! I never imagined I would ever be an office lady. I have worked in two different laboratories, have been a glorified babysitter at a mental institution, and now I am an office lady. Not that I am complaining! Working in a office is just as much of a job as doing anything else. I just never though I would be doing it. So I am a Patient Service Assistant in the Oncology department.

Now back to my office. Originally the room was just used for storage, but they cleared it out just for me. It is between the front desk where the four other women sit and our manager's office. There is a big window on the wall that looks out at a man-made hill with a rock waterfall fountain. I have my own personal phone line. And I am the only one with personal cabinets and cubicles. My desk is about 2x the size of the front desk areas and has a continuation to another area. I have been told that no one else is going to be hired though. So for now the whole office is mine!

This is so weird for me. I no longer have to wear laboratory gloves. I can style my hair anyway I wish. There are no jewelry restrictions. And I can wear whatever shoes I want. Why did I wait so long to try working in an office? This has been the best week I have had in a long time.

Happy New Year's everyone! How was your 2011? Happy to see it end? Or maybe you were wishing it would last a little longer? Anyway I hope 2012 will be a wonderful year for all of us.

I hope everyone was able to complete their resolutions from last New Year's. But if you were unable to achieve your goals do not be discouraged. There is no use dwelling on things from the past. No one can go back and change what has or has not happened. All we can do is start from where we are today and work towards where we want to be next year.

I feel that I have done well with the resolutions and goals I set last year. I am going to try something new this year though. Rather than just making a bunch of resolutions and odd goals I am going to focus on working toward a few large goals. My resolutions this year are to work toward becoming a better blogger, getting ready for my wedding, and working toward going back to school.

Pearls are a girl's best friend

With my break from lolita and himegyaru this month I have been looking at different fashion styles. I have noticed that I have strong draw toward the more elegant and refined fashions, especially if there are pearls and opalescent colors. I have also been working on my picture taking and Photoshop skills. So I decided that I would combine the two things that occupied me this month and take a picture of my past and recent opalescent purchases.

This is my vanity set. I cannot exactly remember when I bought this. I just love it. I wish it came with matching perfume bottles.

My other opalescent items. I think the next pearlesque item I buy will be a short necklace or choker.

Vice: covetousness

The first vice that comes to mind when I think of lolita fashion, especially lifestylers, is covetousness. The need to have a closet (or two) full of jumperskirts, skirts, blouses, coats, shoes, accessories, etc. The greed to have the newest and most popular prints. And the need to have shoes, dresses, or hair accessories in every color. And almost everyone has a wishlist and/or a dream dress.

Very few lolita are free of this vice. I too suffer from it. I had to own BABY's sugar bouquet jumperskirt in black, an Innocent world caplet, and Meta's first school bag. I own one set of Angelic Pretty's ribbon mittens and one of BABY's bunny earmuffs and want to buy more in different colors. I own a multiple array of color stockings. I am seeking a new favorite shoe style to purchase in multiple colors. And I know if I were not so tall or large I would also own several more brand jumperskirts.

The lolita covetousness is amplified by the fact that brands only produce a limited supply of products. The want to own a item before it is sold out or it becomes the next most coveted print is immense. Then like a gateway drug covetousness leads to elitism and idol worship. The girls with the most brand or highly sought after articles become notorious, while the lolitas that painstakingly handmake their clothes or buy from lesser known shops get over looked. And the ladies that buy replica items are made to feel inferior. While I admire those lolita with the rare and expensive clothes, I feel the other ladies deserve credit too. Being a lolita should not be about how much you have spent on a single piece of clothing. It should be about the asethetics of a well coordinated ensemble, the grace of the style, and the happiness the fashion brings the wearer.

This vice is the cause of many nasty lolita secrets and stereotyping. With so much negativity from the outside world there is no reason that a lolita should fear being picked on from another lolita. As a community we should be banding together, but there are instances of broken friendships because of dream dresses and split communities from girls seeking the approval of one member with numerous brand items. I believe that the style and coordination should make a lolita, not the label tag.

It happens at least once in every alternative fashion lover's life. You feel as if instead of wearing your favorite dress, it is wearing you. The fashion you love has become overpowering. Instead of incorporating the style into your daily life, it is taking over your life and smothering you. You still love the style, but feel as if you need a break.

And now it is happening to me. I feel lost in the rules and in the new trends. I am like a manikin displaying clothing rather than expressing who I am through fashion. Combining my love for himegyaru and lolita has left me flustered and indecisive at times. I have even let other's opinions affect ensemble choices.

The 'must have' prints and bright colors do not stir any emotion from me. The overly exaggerated and striking trends have left me longing for something else. Lately it has been pastels and muted colors that make my heart skip a beat. Lady-like dresses and pale nail polishes have caught my attention more than knee high socks and elaborate headdresses. Give me pearls over macaron rings and Louis Vuitton purses over a bunny bag. I want solid colors instead of Melty Chocolate and suede heels over tea party shoes.

So this month I plan to focus on just being a lady. And I will let this odd feeling toward half of my wardrobe work itself out subconsciously.

The Secret of Moonacre

In addition to reading The Three Musketeers and watching Grimm and Once Upon a time, I have been trying to find new and interesting fairytale movies and shows. Last weekend I happened upon a movie called The Secret of Moonacre.

The movies opens with little Maria Merryweather and her governess, Miss Heliotrope, attending the funeral of her late father. Mr Merryweather was so in debt that he leaves his daughter nothing but an old book, The Ancient Chronicles of Moonacre Valley. Being that her father's estate is going to be sold she moves in with her unfriendly and untidy uncle Sir Benjamin Merryweather. Maria's new home, Moonacre Manor, is very odd. Upon arrival Maria and her governess are almost accosted by bandits, most of the house is off limits, there is a forbidden forest, the piano plays by itself, there does not appear to be a kitchen, and Maria's bedroom cieling has live twinkling and shooting stars.

Maria's inherited book tells a fairy tale of a girl who was so loved by nature that she was granted moon pearls, that could great any wish, and the title of The Moon Princess. But upon her wedding day, her family the De Noirs and the groom's family the Merryweathers started a feud over her pearls. The all-too-true story tells of a curse at the 5,000th moon that will destroy the Moonacre Valley unless a pure heart finds the pearls and the two families can work together to return them to the sea. Maria's arrives in Moonacre Valley 4,999 moons since that day.

The Secret of Moonacre was a really cute movie. I loved the idea that the fairytale book was the actual history of the two families and not just a random phophecy. I loved the cast wardrobe. Maria and Miss Heliotrope's dresses were an interesting alternative to typical Victorian fashion. Miss Heliotrope's kimono obi and Maria's different fabric combinations and open backed bustle were so eye catching. And the De Noir bandits' outfits reminded me of The Clockwork Orange.

This movie was obviously meant for a younger audience. Besides some arguing and the bandits briefly kidnapping Maria there really was not any conflict. I was at least excepting a fight scene when the two family finally met to get Maria before the pearls were thrown back into the sea. Anything needed was easily obtained, enemies were easily persuaded to become allies, Maria was quickly able to escape the De Noir's prison, and the location of the lost key and moon pearls were easily found. While The Secret of Moonacre was a delightful movie and had a good story, it sadly had no thrill, suspence, or intrigue.

Inspiration board

I finally sat down a made a preliminary wedding inspiration board. I had to change my theme since Oppa and I are unable to get married in December due to his job having holiday time blockout from November until January. Luckily I had not purchases too many snowflake/winter themed items and what I had purchased I was able to return.

So now our theme is Rococo-esque royalty. I suppose you could say the theme is inspired by Marie Antoinette. Hopefully I will be able to keep my head, at least until after the honeymoon. So everything except my ring has changed, even the venue. While I thought Maryvale was beauitful I felt it was too dark inside for a Rococo themed wedding. So we have chosen the romantic, 19th century Ceresville Mansion. Almost everything has been found again and I can start to focus on other things.

Television fairytales

I thought the idea for C.S. Lewis' quote was fitting for this month, besides that I wanted to start a new book, was the fact that there are two new television shows which have recently aired that are in the fairy tale genre, Grimm and Once Upon a Time. While I do not usually watch television, I have made an exception for these two series.

Grimm airs Fridays at 9pm Eastern Time on NBC

This show follows a homicide detective, David, who has begun to notice odd things with some of the people around him right before his dying Aunt arrives for an unexpected visit. He learns that the old fairy tales are real and he is a descendant of a group of hunters called The Grimms. Upon the passing of his Aunt, he now has to "protect people from the bad ones" and continue his day job as a police officer. This has been relatively easy so far seeing as how his homicide cases lead him to some of the evil creatures featured in the fairy tales.

The first episode was reminiscent of Red Riding Hood, and the second episode would have been Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8pm Eastern Time on ABC

This series switches between two time lines. In one, Prince Charming wakes Snow White up from her glass coffin. Thwarting the Evil Queen's plans to make Snow White pay for "taking away her happiness" and "destroying what she loved". On their wedding day the Evil Queen appears to give their world the curse of no more happy ending. The only one that can defeat her is the yet unborn daughter of Snow White, Emma. But before the curse can reach the castle, the little baby is transported away just in time.

The other time line follows the modern day bounty hunter Emma Swan who is visited by her son, Henry, whom she gave up for adoption as a baby. Henry believes that time has stopped in his town of Storybrooke and that all the citizens are fairytale characters suffering from amnesia. He now has to convince Emma that his adoptive mother and mayor of the town is the Evil Queen and that she is the only person that can save everyone.

I really enjoy both of these shows. Besides the fairytale choices the story genres are different too. Grimm reminds me of a Law & Order-esque police drama. And Once Upon a Time reminds me of The 10th Kingdom without the comedy. Are any of you ladies or gentlemen watching these two series with me?

November challenge

Last month was horrendously busy. The only task I managed to complete was to locate my camera. I sadly only went on one meet-up. And spent the rest of the month working, apply for new jobs, trying not to get sick, and re-planning my wedding. So November will be another month to focus on relaxation. One of my favorite hobbies is reading, especially classical or fantasy books. So in between planning my happy ending, I will be reading others.

I have already read Grimm's fairytales, Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass. I think the next book I would like to read is the tales of The Three Musketeers. I went yesterday to see the new musketeers movie and noticed I've never read the book. Sorry for the short post, I do not feel well. The flu shot was definitely not a good idea. Anyway, have a good November ladies and gentlemen.

October challenge

This quote made me remember an instance in my childhood. I had to construct a big project for one of my classes. So I had made a detailed sketch of what I wanted to construct out of paper mache, but only halfheartedly worked on it. When it was done my mother could see that I was not happy with the results. She told me that, "you cannot excel at anything unless you know what mediocrity is first". I nodded and decided to restart my project again, but this time worked diligently. And even after it was finished, I would try to find areas for improvement every day. By the due date I was extremely pleased with the end result. I ended up getting an A+ for my project and won first place in a contest between all the classes in my grade.

I decided to choose with quote because I feel that I have let my lolita and himegyaru coordinations become mediocre over the last few months. I would not wear accessories or refrain from putting too much though into styling my hair. I was not unhappy with the result, but I knew I could do so much better. I had lowered my performance while my expectations remained high. Not to mention that I need to buy new work and house clothing as well since everything is extremely large on me.

So this month I will focus on raising my performance. I will study my Gothic & Lolita Bibles, Popteen magazines, and Ageha magazines for new make-up tips and coordination ideas. I will attempt to find my camera so that I can take pictures. And will buy new articles of clothing to replace the ones that no longer fits. I will rise to the occasion and not only meet my expectations; I will attempt to exceed them. I hope you ladies are able to be the best and do the best that you can this October too!

Eyes of the Beholder

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is common phrase most girls have probably heard in their tweens or adolescents. It means that beauty is subjective. Different people find different things beautiful. But what about yourself? It is amazing the amount of people that see little beauty in themselves.

I believe it is fine to have something about yourself you want to work on. But wanting to look like someone else, in my opinion, is not a health habit. Wishing to have a body like someone else is a self-hating tactic. The more you wish to have the weight, bust line, waist, hips, etc. of someone else the more you hate your own body. This can lead to self-abuse both verbally and physically. Sometimes we are the worst bullies to ourselves than anyone else can be. If someone were to verbalize some of the thoughts that women have toward themselves there would be serious consequences. Verbal abuse is not tolerated at my work place. If someone were to call someone a loser fat*ss they would be fired. Stop the abuse.

Everyone has a unique body. I am not perfect, but neither is anyone else. I do not like my weigh so I have made a goal to lose the unwanted weight. However, I would never want to be as thin as an Asian model. While I do find them beautiful, I am happy being me. If I spend my time trying to be like someone else who will be me?

I've spent this month trying products that would help my physical body. This last week of September I will focus not only on helping my appearance but also the thoughts toward myself. Starting with what I love about myself.

An act in composure

This post was inspired by bad days and seeing grown women act like children when they do not get their way.

When some people hear the word princess they automatically think of stuck up girls that always have to get their way. At the slightest bit of resistance or inability to get what they want they throw a tantrum or cry. But when I think of a princess I think of someone that when something does not go as planned can act with grace and poise. While I still have a lot to learn to be considered poised, I think I am capable of acting with some composure.

Those that follow my twitter know that the end of this week was hard for me. I found out my bank account had been used to make a fraudulent purchase. Friday I had horrible commute situation that ended in me having to walk 2.3 miles to work. I missed a call from a college I am looking to apply to by 7 minutes. When I called them back, I was told that the next time I could schedule an appointment call was next Thursday.

During those times I vented some frustrations out on twitter. After my venting I continued on with my day. I did not let those issues ruin my day or shut down. Nor did I rage my way through the day. A princess would never take her frustration out on others. She might complain at the moment, she is of course only human, but then she would soldier on with her day. A princess would not brood over events that she cannot control. Dear ladies, I hope you too are trying to be well behaved even on your worst of days.

September challenge

Like the majority of women I had body image issues as a child and teenager. It started with being unsatisfied with my weight and appearance in my tweens. I was always the tallest person in my class, wore glasses, had asthma, and had curly and uncooperative hair. It also did not help that I hated being biracial at the time. All of the girls I thought were pretty looked nothing like me. And I was jealous of half of my cousins with their blond hair and blue eyes or their red hair and green eyes.

All that lead to me giving up on myself and not caring what I looked like. By the time I was 16 I weighed 309lbs. My entire wardrobe consisted of jeans, shorts, oversized T-shirts, running jackets, and a pair of sneakers. I thought fashion and make-up were only for pretty girls. And I was most certainly not one. But then something finally clicked for me and by my 17th year I started losing weight, and trying to be more fashionable. A friend introduced me to a flattening iron and I began to replace my old unflattering clothes. Over the next few years I learned that while I was not one of the prettiest girls in the world I was certainly not ugly.

Sadly I let my weight balloon back up while working at my last horrible job. I was so fixated on how miserable I was with my job that I did not focus on anything else. Happily I have lost most of the regained weight already. Since last year I have lost 45lbs!

So September is the month that I will focus on beauty, inside and out. For those of you who follow my twitter already know that I have been cutting back on soda. And a few of my next goals are to remember to take my vitamins daily and find a good facial cleanser. I hope everyone will have a healthy and beautiful September as well!

These boots were made for walking...

I think this has been the best month I have had so far this year. Although I have still been busy at work, it is no where near as bad as last month. And my plans for relaxation have been going smoothly.

Between this week and last I have been focusing on one of my favorite relaxation past times, shopping. Ever since seeing this picture of Sakurina I have wanted a pair of white cowboy boots. My local stores did not carry cowboy boots and I could not find a pair online for $200 or less. While out one day I happened to walk by a cute little pre-owned shop and right in the window were a pair of boots! And luckily they were in my size ❤.

I also found these really cute pumps at Burlington coat factory last week. I was sad that the only colors they had were black and cream. I would have loved a white pair of these as well.

I would be in shoe heaven if I could find boots similar to these Liz Lisa ankle boots.

A lot of good things have been happening this month. I have lost a little more weight, been asked to do a few guest blog posts, and I have been accepted into the Maryland gyaru circle! Thank you August. I really needed you.

Dear Hair Cuttery,

Hello my name is Kristen. I just visited your new shop in Hunt Valley today. While your service was wonderful and my hairstyle looked nice while the stylist was working on it. I am not pleased with the final product.

Your stylist refused to tease my hair or use hairspray as I had requested. So after leaving the store for 5 minutes my hair was completely flat! I have never been to a salon in which the stylist refused to listen to her client. For $60 I could have washed my own hair. If it wasn't for the appointment I have to attend downtown at 3pm, I would certainly be back in your store right now making you restyle my hair for free! Also your stylist originally said the price would be $40, but when she was ringing me up the price changed to $60. Granted my hair is long, but it is not elbow length!

Although I was given a customer card and the stylists card I will not be using them in the future. Do not ever look for future business from me. And I will make sure to tell my friends and readers not to visit your salons.

I have only ever been to one salon that I loved. Sadly my stylisted retired and the salon later closed. If there is anyone in Maryland that knows of an excellent stylist please tell me!

Relaxation

After working two weeks straight I planned my first weekend off to be all about relaxation and recuperation. My first agenda for relaxation was a lazy movie weekend. What better way to unwind than comfy pajamas, fuzzy slippers, a hot cup of tea, and my favorite and dramas movies?

I am also slowly working on a sewing a new skirt. I have finished a few more lessons on my Japanese Rosetta Stone. And then next weekend I will be joining my local lolita community for a topiary garden meet-up.

I am so happy that July and August 1st are finally over!

Last month I was so busy to the point of depriving myself of a life. Between my normal work schedule, training the new processors, all the time I had to filled in because of people calling out or being terminated, and being on call, most of my relaxation time was spent sleeping. I was starting to feel mildly depressed. And the situation with my two new coworkers was not helping my mood either. I was even unhappy the few times I was free to be out with friends. Sorry to all the people I temporarily stopped talking to. I did not want to hear about your movie nights, meet-ups, and preparations for Otakon, which I had to work through, while I was at work.

But not this month! For the month of August I am going to relax, have fun, and enjoy myself again. I have only agreed with work extra hours on three occasions. One of which was yesterday. So I will finally be going back to crafting, watching Asian dramas, and of course blogging ❤. Life is too short for me to be unhappy and to spend the majority of my waking hours working or commuting to/from work. Working is important, but being happy is even more important. Make sure you are enjoying yourself this month too!

Just me, myself, and I

Today's post has nothing to do with lolita or himegyaru fashion. It is a rant about the attitude of two normals I had have to recently deal with. You have been fairly warned.

This month I have had the pleasure of being introduced and working with two new coworkers. While I can happily ignore most of my coworker's inappropriate or uninteresting conversations, these two new women are intent on including me in everything. Then when I do not give an answer they like, they always respond with "That's because you're mixed." And usually I go back to ignoring them. However, I must have heard that statement at least fourteen times between Thursday and Friday alone. Then when I finally told them if they did not like my views to just exclude me, they felt offended. Ha!

Just the statement "That's because you're mixed" is offensive. They could have said that I would not understand because I'm from another state, because I did not grow up in a big city, or because I am younger than them. No, it has to be a racial issue. These woman would explode if I were to ask them about the Arthurian Legend and when they could not answer me to say "That's because you're black" or "That's because you're dark skinned." I would be murdered for uttering anything close to that.

I feel if you do not like my opinions after the first couple of times, why would you bother to continue including me in your conversation? I never asked to be included and I never stated that I felt left out. Continue on with whatever it is you are doing and just let me complete my work for the day. They can be in a huff toward me from on, but I do not care.

My taste in music or nonexistent interest in celebrates has nothing to do with my racial background. If anything I think being from a biracial family would give someone a broad or unbiased opinion of most things. I think that my interests are very broad. I would rather read than watch reality television. And I would rather study languages than get drunk. I would rather save or spend my money on a wonderfully cute wardrobe than on weaves and fake nails. There are mixed people that have no interest in the things that I do and there are African American people that would prefer do the things that I do. So race has nothing to do with what does and does not interest someone.

I am so overjoyed that I do not have to work with them this week. Besides the racial divide they have wedged between us I need a break for the word 'swoop'. I dislike when people take one word and say it all the time. "Let me eat before I have to swoop." "That's swoop." "Gonna swoop with my boy tonight." And those are just the tip of the iceberg! They are on numerous blogs, communities, forums, and guides. Go to a meet-up and there is bound to be somone talking about them. Switching between subgenres can be tricky because each subgenres seems to have their own different set. Rules. What you should and should not wear. How you should and should not act. Whom you should and should not associate with. And what activities you can and cannot do. While I find these lists interesting and helpful at times, there are just too many. For a fashion that has no official standardized rule book there is a sea of opinionated naysayers that will gladly tell you what is and what is not lolita.

I believe that if one is new to the fashion it is best to listen and try to follow the basic rules. But do not lose yourself trying to be what others think is the prefect lolita. Let your personality shine. You do not have to look like a walking brand store or stop having fun to be considered a good lolita. Experiment if you want to. Mix styles, be yourself, and create your own niche.

Being in the fashion for a long time has a benefit. I have seen the numerous rule lists and how-to guides. I have read the advice columns and researched the trends for my favorite subgenres. But I follow my own rules. I do not care how others think I should present myself or dress. Granted that my attitude and interests are already suited for lolita and himegyaru fashions. I am just being myself. Not letting the opinion of people I will most likely never meet effect my life.

This month I am daring you and myself to think more for ourselves. Continue to read the guides and lists but truly decide if they are any help to you. Make your own set of rules. Be your own lolita, not someone else's.

Being lolita

First the stockings, then the blouse, bloomers, petticoat, and a dress. Style hair, put on make-up, pick accessories, slip on a pair of shoes and paint nails. One last final check to make sure everything is in place and preparations are complete. Open the door, open a parasol, and leave for the day. Yes it might take three hours to get ready, but it is worth it. Why? Because I am a lolita. I strive to use the prefect accessories with each outfit and only the cutest shoes will do. I live for the details and the extra steps. And I would not have it any other way. Getting ready for a full lolita coordination is not a tiresome chore but an exciting transformation.

The negative comments and inquisitions are trivial. The odd stares and double takes are normal. The love of my fashion intensifies by the smiles, positive comments, and the joyous look in a little girl's eyes. Nothing brightens my day like the praise from a elderly individual. While others my age scoff at being called cute I strive for it.

Shedding my disguise of being normal for the princess I am is priceless. The world has enough ordinary people. Why waste my life trying to be mediocre and average as well? I refuse to be common. I refuse to assimilate. Why? Because I am a lolita. I will live my life, make my own rules, and follow no predestined mold.

No popular fashion pleases me. Most bags or shoes in local store do not grab my attention. I do not bat a lash at the stylish trends. My passion draws from frills of yore. Dainty lace and bows galore is what my heart yearns for. Please give me petticoats and bloomers over T-shirts and jeans. Why? Because I am a lolita. And I am happy to be me.

I believe there is no shame in stopping an activity because it is something that was not for you. You attempted something new and it did not work out, so try something else new.

Unhappiness

It is typical that the month I set aside for change and to inspire happiness as been one of the most unhappiest months for me. With a chaotic work schedule, illness in my family, and the recent issue with my paypal being hacked I have had little time and desire for personal change.

This month has definitely been a lesson in changing what I can and accepting what I cannot. I am happy with what little self change I was able to accomplish. Plus I did managed to finish a few more items from my 101 in 1001 days list! And I hope to finish the other items in the future.

I did receive a few e-mails wondering if I was going to stop Princessly Living and leave lolita/himegyaru. No way. I enjoy my blog and fashion too much. A true vegan would not stop because of sadness. Olympic athletes do not quit because life decides to play dirty. And I most certainly will never stop being me because of a few bumps in the road.

So many people these days are unhappy. They loath their jobs, detest their body image, dislike their friends, and hate their material objects. People spend most of their energy on being negative but refuse to use any of their time to try to change what they are unhappy about.

The beginning of spring is supposed to be a happy and cheerful time. So this month I will focus on changing that which I am unhappy with and that I have the ability to change. This ties in with the personal development plan, PDP, I created. Some of the areas I am unhappy with are my weight, hair, and nails. Ever since I made that PDP I have been working toward achieving my short term goals. I have only managed to accomplish a few of the goals I set, but I am very happy. My nails are flaking less often and are longer, I have lost 15lbs, and cleared out numerous old pieces of clothing from my wardrobe. I also was very brave and had my hair cut two weeks ago. I have had many bad experiences with my hair so I rarely allow people to do anything to it. But my ends look healthier and my hair has grown most of the 3 inches back! ❤

I hope this spring will bring you happiness. And if it does not I hope you can change whatever it is that impedes on your happiness.

American Princess

Yesterday I am sitting at home, enjoying my day off. After building, unpacking, and arranging items in my house for over a month I did not what to look at another box yesterday. So I sat most of the day crocheting my lovely blue blanket and watching mindless reality television.

After about three hours of watching television I noticed multiple casting call commericals which made me remember that I at one time wanted to be on a reality contest show too. Nothing like Jersey Shore, Survivor, American's Next Top Model, or The Amazing Race. I wanted to apply to the show American Princess. This series ran on WE for sadly only two seasons in 2005 and then again in 2007. I only was able to watch season 2. In American Princess 12 woman were nominated to appear on the show. They were groomed and sent home one by one each week through different challenges and punishments just like any other reality. The difference was the challenges were things a princess should be able to do or know plus one or two physical challenges. And the punishments were things such as learning to write a formal letter or act a hostess of a party. Later in the show when the girls were out on the town they were chaperoned by beaus. And the prize at the end of the season was to be crowned princess of some small region at a lovely coronation ball.

I found out about the series during a rerun marathon in 2007. Sadly I have not seen it on television since and there does not seem to be a DVD set anywhere either. Since the show favored odd years, I really hoped in 2009 that there were be another season and I could apply, but there never was.

STILL moving

The saying "You never know how much stuff you have until you move" is completely true! I cannot believe we are still moving stuff into the apartment and still have not put everything away. There are boxes in every room and still more in Brad's old room. When we move again I am definitely hiring a moving company. Then I will have everything in my house in one day.

My local goodwill must love me. I cannot remember how many bags of clothes, unwanted books, and other stuff I have donated or far.

I like this quote although I think the needless wants in life are what make it fun. Lolita/himegyaru fashions are definitely a needless want. Music, books, dramas, and video games are needless wants as well, but without these things I would have little to enjoy. So rather than eliminating the needless wants in my life I will work on eliminating the general clutter. This month I will devote myself to getting better organized and spring cleaning.

In moving to our new apartment I discovered that my fiance had a wonderful collection of literature which I did not own, but have always wanted to read. I have finished with The Complete Book of Sherlock Holmes and have begun to read Grimm's Fairy Tales. Peter Pan will be the next book to read after that. It is amusing that he is just as excited about my book collection as I am with his. He has confiscated my The Picture of Dorian Gray, Bram Stoker's Dracula Clockwork Orange, and Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Virtue: courage

Just like any other hobby lolita/himegyaru fashion seems to bring out the best or the worst in people. I have noticed some of the most charming people turn into either e-fame seeking elitists or humble mentors over the years. With myself honestly falling somewhere between those two. Thinking of subjects like this reminds me of an ex-associate of mine. She was so sweet when I first met her, but than turned vain and spiteful toward the end of our friendship. Now I avoid coming in contact with her as much as possible. You are who you associate with and I do not want to develop a reputation like the one she has.

One of the first virtues that comes to mind when I think of lolita/himegyaru enthusiasts is courage. Most people would not associate fashion with a quality such as courage. However, I think that every one of the ladies and gentlemen that dare to be different because they want to, and not because it is the cool thing to do, is extremely courageous. For every amount of praise I receive from strangers I receive just as many negative comments and snide remarks. There are many lolita that have reported being harassed and even threatened. Not to mention the courage it takes every one of us to deal with the negativity in our own fashion communities.

It takes courage to deviate from the norm and stand up for your interests. To know that you spent hours primping, fluffing, and getting ready only to have people stare at you, make rude comments, or ask why you waste your time/money on such an odd hobby. It takes courage to know that you are wearing something you love and your family, friends, or co-workers might not approve. It takes courage to go to meet-ups and post pictures of yourself. It takes courage to receive and accept constructive and some non-constructive criticism. And it takes courage to ignore any self doubt and express yourself.

All of those factors weighing against us and yet we still have the perseverance to continue to dress up and go enjoy ourselves confirms that lolita/himegyaru are definitely courageous. These fashions may be cute, feminine, and youthful, but they are definitely not for the bashful. The next time you are accused of being a wimp or coward do not believe that for a minute. You are lolita/himegyaru/(insert whatever alternative fashion you like)! Always hold you head up high and be proud that you are different.

Skyland Manor

Yesterday my fiance and I set out for a tour of the second venue where I am interested in having my wedding and reception, Skyland Manor. We set out at 10:00am and unfortunately did not arrive at Skyland until 2:00pm! I knew that Skyland was going to be pretty far away, but I did not think it was going to take 4 hours.

The area around Skyland was gorgeous. There was a huge lake that was iced over and the forests I am sure are breath taking when in bloom. I am sure I would have enjoyed the view more if I had not spent 98% of our road trip on the highway. And Skyland Manor was absolutely lovely. The tour was well worth the drive.

I loved Skyland Manor. It really makes me wish I lived in New Jersey. Skyland definitely had what Maryvale was missing. But the 4 hour drives make me lean more towards Maryvale or searching for another venue in Maryland. I do not know if I can ask 90 people to endure that horribly long drive either by car or charter bus.

Pros:

~ Difficult driving on small roads if it were to snow
~ Probably will have to rent charter buses

March third was my 26th birthday! I am still not quite sure if that is something to be happy about or not... Anyway, for my birthday Brad took me somewhere I had never been before, The Zoo. It was too cold for some of the animals to be out, but I still was able to see a large selection of animals.

Once home from the zoo Brad started working on making delicious chicken stir fry and I made a cake with strawberry filling.

I am not too happy with the appearance. I bought sweet gum paste to make the hinamatsuri emperor and empress, but it was too hard to even get it out of the package. I tried water, vegetable oil, and low heat. But nothing would soften the hard brick. I saw recipes to make sweet gum paste online so next year I think I will make my own. As a consolation Brad ran to the store and got us a special drink. Because what goes better with a strawberry-filled white hinamatsuri cake than strawberry daiquiri wine coolers

The weather in March is always unperdictable. Between slightly warm days, horribly windy days, and cold rainy days, March is one of the months that I spend the most time indoors, besides the coldest days in winter. But 31 days of same surrounds does tend to give me cabin fever. So I like to bide the time by learning new things, reading, or if I dare to venturing outdoors I like to see new places.

I will try to make March a month of exploration, experimentation, and learning. Some ideas to make this a month of intellectual growth are to read new literature, learn a new skill, take a class, visit a new place you have never been to, or go to a museum or play.

Sorry for the lack of a picture. I am writing this via Blogger app on my phone. Would that make this a plog (phone blog) post?

I am so happy to be in my apartment! I got the apartment with a den like I orginially wanted. There is nice landscape around my community which I think will look lovely in spring. I am not too far from the lake which the community is named for and the swimming pool is within walking distance.

I however am NOT happy with Comcast! I put my order for service in on Feb. 4th. Three weeks later I still have no service. But a two hour phone call to this hateful company rewarded me with a confirmation that my service WILL be on by Tuesday at a cheaper price than what I originally signed up for for a whole year.

So I have no internet this weekend besides my phone. And sadly I have the new Gothic & Lolita Bible information only partially translated. Oh well. Everyone have a good weekend!

Personal development plan

I will not bore you with tales of how life and work are taking over my days and the only fleeting hours in which I am not physically busy my mind is fixated on planning the move to my new apartment or looking for wedding vendors.

Anyway, one of the problems most people have with self development is that they do not know where they want to go. How can you grow when you do not know what you want to grow into? If you do not have an end goal where do you start?

This month's quote made me think back to an assignment I had in a Freshman development course. We had to create a personal development plan. This would help the students plan some of the steps we would take in college and later in our future careers. This was a nice project for future thinking. So I thought what would be a better assignment than a PDP for planning on becoming a better lolita, himegyaru, and person.

To develop plans in which I can become a more articulate, elegant, well-dressed, and creative person.

Self knowledge

One aspect of personal growth is truly knowing yourself. You cannot improve yourself if you do know where you are at and where you want to go.

We are asked questions about ourselves all day long, especially if we are dressed to the nines. If you are like me you prattle off a simple, overused answer just so you can continue on with whatever task you were doing.

However I think every so often there is a need to sit down and re-evaluate yourself. Reasons for why you do or do not do something might change over time. Everyday you gain new insights and opinions which can strengthen or weaken your interests in a certain subject. Attitudes also change over time. And the passion you first felt for a hobby or an object of interest usually wane over time. Once a year I like to sit down and re-evaluate myself. It is a little early, but when to better evaluate yourself then during the month dedicated to personal growth.

What is your purpose?
1. To enjoy life and live with as much elegance, grace, and style as possible.

2. To be an excellent blogger. To cease procrastination and post multiple times a week.

Do you like where you are and what you have become?
1. I know I could be a better lolita and himegyaru. I need to research and apply myself more. But I am happy with who I am and what I have become so far.

2. I am not disappointed about my blog. I truly enjoy writing articles, but wish that I were more articulate.

Why do you do what you do?
1. Because I am a princess. I am not the heiress of a country or a great estate. Nor do I live in a fairy tale or plan to marry a prince. But to people in this world I am a princess. I am my parent's little princess, and am my fiance's precious. And as I have said before I wear these styles to express my love of girlie and elegant lifestyle I already loved before I knew about these fashions. I have always strived to be graceful, elegant, and well mannered. So I believe the hime lolita fashion perfectly portrays who I am.

2. Because I love to write/type. I would actually love to write a book someday. I love to blog about being a lolita and sharing my thoughts. I also enjoy getting feedback from people.

How do you go from here?
1. From here on I will work harder to become a better lolita/himegyaru I will look at more magazines and try to find out about current trends. I will join and check daily any forums pertaining to the fashions of my interest.

2. From here I will attempt to increase my posting frequency. I will search forums and journals for interesting topics of write about. I will devote more time to thinking of and writing different posts. And I will work hard to continue with the different series I have started and would like to start.

What do you want to accomplish and why?
1. I want to be the best hime lolita/ himegyaru I can be. I want to be elegant and embody the word princess.

The castle at Maryvale

In the spirit of being old fashion I wanted to have a long engagement. I did not quite think it would be this long though, but after almost four years Brad and I have finally set a date! December 12, 2012. I thought it would be cute to have identical numbers. Plus it will the last time this century that identical numbers will be possible. (And I am also a science nerd and having a wedding date of 12³ tickles me pink.)

With my wedding date set I have started the fun process of researching and picking venues. I am down to my final two choices. The castle at Maryvale in Maryland and Skyland Manor in New Jersey. So far I have only been to see Maryvale. I left my camera home that day, but I did take pictures. Unfortunately my phone takes rather dark pictures. I am just going to have to keep my camera in my purse from now on. I wish I could have taken more pictures the library, groom's room, and solarium were lovely, but there were too many people walking around in those areas.

I loved Maryvale, but I feel like it was missing something. I don't quite know what though. Maybe it was just all the people there for the bridal show. Whatever it was missing hopefully Skyland will have it.

Pros:
~ Very short traveling distance from my apartment.
~ All planning can be done in Maryland.
~ A small castle.

Cons:
~ Cannot use the chapel since I am not Catholic.
~ Missing something...
~ The castle is only available from 6:30pm-10:30pm during the week

February is the month of love. Time for Valentine's Day, chocolates, cards, roses, and romances. But with all the love this month there always seems to be someone forgotten. Ourselves. So much time is spent on buying gifts and trying to get the adoration or just attention from that special someone that no one thinks about how they should feel about themselves. All year long you love your family, adore your crushes or partners, glorify your idols, and envy a multitude of people. But few people focus on themselves.

No matter how fortunate or skillful we humans are at something we always seem to wish to be someone else. Growing up I was told that whatever I admired or envyed in other people I could do as well. I was just noticing that they have more of that quality/talent or put more effort into that thing than I did. This month's challenge is to focus on bettering yourself and finding ways to grow into a better lolita, himegyaru, and/or person.

Accomplishments

This month has been rather busy. I have set so many goals and accomplished quite a few of them. How about you? There were 4 major goals things which I set out to accomplish: to find an apartment, have my blanket at least half way complete, participate in the 101 goals in 1001 days meme, and make a mission statement.

1. To find an apartment
On the 6th I toured the eight apartments I liked online. Later that day I finally decided on one. The only problem is they do not have a 1bed/1bath with a den available yet. So I found my apartment, I just have to wait for one with a den ...or compromise.

2. To be mid-way finished with my blanket
I have been a diligent worker bee with my crocheting. There have been many times when I should have been working on a post, but I was too enthralled with crocheting. My blanket is more than half way finished! Just a few more panels and the border and it will be complete.

3. Participate in the 101 goals in 1001 days web meme.
Since this was the month I set aside for goals I decided to start a 101 in 1001 days goal list. And thus far I have finished four goals. How about you?

4. Make a mission statement
When I was thinking about what goals I wanted to make this month I noticed that I never gave Princessly Living a mission statement. A mission statement being a company's or person's long term goal/agenda would work perfectly with this month's theme.

The Mission
Princessly living is a blog to inspire myself and other lolita, himegyaru, and persons with an interest in girly fashions to live as a princess would. To rise above the ordinary person and live a life of grandeur, sophistication, beautiful clothes, luxury, elegance, and grace.

Since this is the month of setting new goals and dreams I thought it would be wonderful to try and participate in the popular 101 goals in 1001 days web meme. The mission is to complete 101 tasks in a period of 1001 days (2.75 years). Thus starting from today I have until October 21, 2013 to complete everything.

Obstacles

I did not think I would give another quote so soon. But this quote is relevant when making goals and dreams. My mother always told me to dream big, but never let your dreams steamroll you over.

The beginning of 2011 is not going as smoothly as hoped. My mother had surgery on the 3rd. Then some of my hopes and goals I started to plan last year already have to be compromised. My mother's surgery took longer than the doctor said it would, but went well. She is very sore, but home and well. Once done with her crisis then came a few issues for me.

The unfortunate: I wanted to go see Kagrra,'s final concert on March 3rd, my birthday. Not being a member of the fan club I had to wait to apply for tickets. I applied through MusicJapanPlus as soon as they had overseas ticket sales. By Dec. 27th I would receive an invoice if I managed to get a ticket. I still have not received an invoice. So now I need something else to do for my birthday.

Also I so wanted to buy a house this year. But I apparently need to build credit to apply for anything. So for a year or two I will have to use a credit card and pay rent. I dislike credit cards. I would rather pay for everything with my accessible income.

The good: I found a wonderful venue for my wedding! I do not want to get my hopes too high until I go for a tour though. But I have seen pictures and have fallen in love. While searching the website I noticed that ceremonies have to be Catholic. Neither my groom nor I are Catholic. After leaving a message to request more information, it took two days for the curator to call back. But I received good news. I can still have my wedding there! Yay, for planning ahead.

All in all my year is going well so far. How about you?

Happy New Years! Old father time has left and a new year has begun. Time to make resolutions, beak bad habits, begin new traditions, and set new goals for the upcoming year.

Merry Christmas

First I would like to say Merry belated Christmas! I hope everyone had an excellent holiday and got everything they wanted. I was so busy working and with family I did not get to make this post earlier.

The best present I received this year was Milo. He is a large, older cat Brad got from a family friend. She found him roaming on the streets one night and rescued him. Brad knew I wanted a cat and Milo is an absolute sweetheart. And my kittens, D'Artagnan and Leonidas, are still in Delaware. My mother is reluctant to give me any of them. Do not worry. He was given shots and checkout before he was given to me.

In between work I went to a family dinner party. Brad's brother is a chef and likes to cook during holidays. The holiday decorations were so beautiful I took some pictures.

Challenge digest

There have been a few lolita secrets lately about missing Princess Portal. Which reminded me that I have missed the old blog too. I do not so much miss the articles, but the monthly challenges. I really enjoyed having an inspirational goal or task to do each month. So I thought I would like to attempt monthly challenge posts myself.

I have been debating about how I was going to go about this. I finally decided that I would take a quote per month and work around that. I think I will make multiple posts throughout the month rather than just one. It is too late this month to start so I will start next year. I am in no way as articulate or creative as Princess Skye, but I will enjoy having monthly incentives to fulfill.

Pet peeve #5: Lolita seeking prince

Sweet lolita searching for a tall, handsome prince to save me from the dragon that is platitudinous fashion. Looking for a prince that is romantic, will pamper me, and knows the difference between Venetian and raschel lace. I am looking for someone that go shopping with me, drink tea, read fictional literature, and will dress to the nines upon my command! He must use his own make-up and adore lolita fashion! Already having an aristocratic or kodono wardrobe is a plus.

I have seen many lolita secrets and forum topics about girls wanting a prince that will dress up with them. I have even come across a forum post about a lolita that was thinking of breaking up with her boyfriend because he would not dress up with her! Yes, you read that correctly. She was planning to leave a perfectly good relationship because of clothing. I find that utterly ridiculous.

Most lolita seem to dislike when people tell them to dress normal. Why would you annoy your partner or leave a relationship because the guy would not change how he dresses? No one has the right to dictate how someone else dresses, except parents who buy clothing for their children, school systems, and supervisors. Just as you are expressing yourself in lolita or gyaru clothing your partner is expressing himself. I feel that someone dictating what I can and cannot wear oppresses a small part of who I am. (However, work dress codes are necessary and do not bother me.) Your partner might feel the same way as well.

I have never seen the girls that make these types of posts take into account that their partners might feel uncomfortable dressing up. I would rather have my fiance be comfortable in jeans and a super hero T-shirt than uncomfortable and self conscious in a suit.

I believe girls should like a guy based on his attitude and personality, not a shallow thing such as the clothes he wears. Remember fashion tastes change as we age. I would rather have a guy that acts princely than one that dresses princely. Just as I feel girls should not use pets or babies as fashion accessories, they also should not use their boyfriends, partners, or husbands as one either.

Why does happy ever after have to end?

You can see it on T-shirts, pants, purses, any multitude of accessories, and toys. Princess. This title portrays both innocence and narcissism. Images of Disney princesses, actual royalty, or entitled rich girls come to mind at the mention of the word.

Most girl's are told when they are little that they are princesses. Most movies, coloring books, and toys for girls are princess themed. We are indulged in a world of make believe and fairy tales. Society accepts this. There is nothing wrong with labeling yourself or being labeled a princess when you are in elementary school, and then we are supposed to grow out of it. This phase passes and a new obsession will take its place. But what happens if this interest in princesses does not fade away?

When a girl tends to keep her childhood princess interests she is labeled as another type of princess. She is seen as either being a space cadet or having a princess complex. Images of the show Bridezilla comes to mind when I think of how 'an adult princess' is viewed. Ranting and raving. Nothing is good enough for her. Throwing temper tantrums at the slightly hint that she is not going to get something she wants. She must have the biggest toys and the best items of everyone around her.　Wanting to be a princess does not mean that you need to act egotistical and attention seeking. Adult princesses should show the world there is more to being a princess than acting like a diva.

I see nothing wrong with labeling yourself as a princess as long as you can still act your age. There are of course behaviors and activities that are accepting at the age of four and not at the age of twenty-four or forty-four. Wanting the best items you can afford and maintaining a certain appearance is okay. Throwing temper tantrums and manipulating people around are not okay. My mother let me surround myself with a life of fantasy and I have a science degree and a wonderful career.

I have never been ashamed to state I am an adult princess. Besides my love of fantasy and my fashion tastes I am relatively normal. I do not use lolita and himegyaru fashion as an 'I wish I were a Disney princess' escapism tactic. I think of myself as a practical princess. I wear these styles to express my love of girlie and elegant lifestyle I already loved before I knew about these fashions. I am in no way a special snowflake. Nor I do not think I should get everything for free. I neither act like a diva nor a spoiled brat. I enjoy wearing pastel dresses, pearls, and having flowing hair. And I have a love for the ultra-feminine and adorable.

There are so many parents that worry their daughters will not grow out of the princess phase. Why wouldn't you want girls to feel like princesses? It is such a self esteem boost. And what girl does not want to feel the best about herself? So many children and teens nowadays have such low self-esteem and negative body images. Why not let girls portray the princesses they want themselves to be? Princesses embody gracefulness, elegance, charm, and beauty. Their lives are adventurous, full of travel, and meeting new people. Plus they have money and nice material possessions. Of course life cannot always be pearls, rainbows, and cupcakes. Princesses have problems just like anyone else, but they also have assistants and advisers to help them. And who would not like the help of advisers in difficult situations?

Let the little girls grow up to be whom they want. Teach them right from wrong and let their imaginations soar.

Raging e-mails not needed

A few lovely e-mail trolls, or one person with no life, have inspired me on a topic I have been thinking of posting for some time now. Race. For those that do not know I am half African American. You may feel free to unfollow me if that makes you upset or offends you in any way.

This morning I received three nasty e-mails about the fact that I am an African American wearing primarily Asian or Caucasian dominated fashions. If this person(s) took the time to read my blog they would know I enjoy the fact that I am a deviant from normal American society. I also enjoy that I differ from the popular displayed black culture as well. So the sock puppet e-mails do not offend me in the least. I am proud of who I am -taste in fashion, skin color, and hobbies alike-.

This person(s) loved spouting nonsense such as I belong wearing booty jeans, massive hoop earrings, mini skirts, and shirts that leave nothing for the imagination. I have never identified with that kind of style nor do I wear clothing like that. Placing someone in a stereotypical group such as that is beyond archaic. I did not know that clothing defined what race a person belongs to. Does that mean African American gentlemen cannot wear a three piece business suit? Or looking at the other side of the argument, does that mean Caucasians cannot wear brands primarily worn by African Americans?

Other arguments they tried to justify is that I do not fit the picture of a princess or porcelain doll, so why am I trying to portray myself as one? Because it is the 21st century, I can, and I want to. There might be cause for concern if I kept stating I was a Disney princess or if I attempted to wear white foundation and doll make-up, but that is not the case. There have been princesses of all shapes, colors, and sizes throughout history. So I do not know how I could not fit into the image of a princess. I will also point out there are black porcelain dolls.

Yes, lolita/himegyaru is a fashion generally geared toward those with a light complexion. Yes, lolita fashion is based of European fashion and designed by the Japanese. Yes, himegyaru is a fashion which imbues a princessly spirit. However, nowhere is it written that girls or boys of other races cannot wear lolita/himegyaru fashion. Fashion and clothing have no racial discrimination. Clothing tags describe how to care for and wash clothes, but I have never seen one tell who can and cannot wear the clothes.

The grief I receive from my fashion choices does not stop with anonymous e-mails. Much like other lolita/himegyaru I am sometimes chastised by peers, neighbors, and random strangers. I have no problem with being called odd or asked why I dress the way I do. But being rude by calling someone an Oreo is not needed and childish. Those kind of statements do not deter me from dressing in my favorite fashions. Nor do they deter me from blogging about my favorite fashions. So please go find another hobby other than making sock puppet e-mail accounts and sending me vulgar e-mails that will just be deleted. Thank you.

Happy Halloween!

I hope everyone is having a good holiday. Rather than going to a party this year I stayed home with my fiance and his younger sister, Kai. We listened to Halloween music, drank apple cider, watched scary movies, and carved pumpkins. This was the first time I had ever carved a pumpkin.

The three Totoro are my pumpkins. I wanted to carve something cute and different than a plain lack-o'-lantern. Sadly the tiny Totoro's candle went out before Kai could take the picture and the middle Totoro's candle was dying as the picture was being taken. Brad's pumpkin is on the ground and top two pumpkins are Kai's.

Shopaholic

The other day I looked at my calendar and noticed there are only three more months until Christmas. And I still have yet to buy presents... I always end up waiting until the last minute to buy presents. But this year I have begun to shop early. Christmas is not going to sneak up on me again this year.

I dislike shopping with the sole intent that everything I purchase is for other people. I am the horrible kind of person that always finds something she likes when shopping for other people. Sometimes I end up leaving the store with two piles of purchases. One for the person(s) I went shopping for and one for myself. When shopping online I seem to have better control. So this year I am planning to do my present shopping online.

While searching online for Christmas gift ideas I came across a neat little webshop called The Handpicked Collection. There are a few gifts I would love to get my family members from there and of course a few items I would like for myself.

I was looking to update my kitchen from the plain, normal kitchen utensils, flatware, pots, and dishes I currently have. I do not know why it has taken me so long to lolify my kitchen, but I need to. The Handpicked Collection has adorable kitchen gift ideas. A few of the items I am interested in are the polka dot pots. I wish they came in blue, but pink is cute.

There are also heart shaped cutting boards. The boards come in two different sizes. These will match the heart shaped measuring spoons I recently bought.

There are also cute towels featured on The Handpicked Collection which I would like. However, I promise to buy everything later and focus only on buying gifts for others at the moment.

I wish my local stores had cute kitchen items too.

Giving Up On Ordinary

Ordinary is boring, why not strive for extraordinary.

Once upon a time there was a little girl that was treated like a princess. She was told to embrace her dreams, expand her imagination, and live every day to the fullest. Everyday was dress-up games, make believe, and fairy tales. Growing up she was taught responsibilities and manners. She began to see how the world worked around her and tried to find a place where she would fit in. Her parents told her to always be true to herself and follow her dreams. Then she became an adult. Society told her to go to college, get a job, and give up on her childhood dreams. She did go to college and find a job. But give up on her dreams? No way!

I believed there is no reason the magic of childhood cannot continue into adulthood. Yes, adults have an immense amount of responsibilities. But once you have the time to enjoy yourself, the activities you love are even more fun. Why only let child have all the fun? As I grew up I was determined to never let go of my childhood dreams and ambitions. Never give up a dream because it is unattainable. Revise impossible dreams so they become possible to achieve. I never tell myself I cannot do something, because I am too old. Life is short and I intend to enjoy every moment of it.

Society might classify my views as escapism. Which to a point they are. I am unhappy with the ordinary societal lifestyle. So I chose to be a deviant and hold onto some of my childhood ambitious. I incorporate these hopes and dreams into my adult life. I might not ever become an actual princess, but I can dress and behave as one would. I might not ever get to live in a castle, but I can live in a large Victorian house and give it a name. I might not be able to own my own horse, but I can join an equestrian club.

There is no reason to turn into a pessimistic 'I hate my life' adult. I intend to march to the beat of my own drum throughout my life and enjoy every moment of it. Do you follow what makes you happy?

This post if for anyone, lolita or not. Public transportation is consistent and uncomfortable at time. But if we can work together and try our best to follow some general rules it could make public transportation slightly more tolerable.

Moving back to Maryland means experimenting with public transportation sometimes. Currently living an hour and a half from my work is not fun during rush hour traffic. Recently I been braving Baltimore's light rail and bus systems off and on. The light rail is a nice ride. It frequently seems to be on time and there is hardly anyone on the train until the route starts to enter the city. Every time I rode the light rail it has never gotten crowded. The bus however is 20 minutes late consistently and crowded. Few people on that bus have any etiquette. And I am not talking about Emily Post high society etiquette. Simple common sense or courtesy is all that is needed.

Public transportation tips:
Cover you mouth! If you have a cold, are allergic to something, or just feel that tickle in the back of your throat cover your mouth before you cough or sneeze. Passengers do not want to get sick or have your spittle in their face, neck or, on their person in general.

Bring tissues. If you are sick carry tissues. Do not wipe your runny nose with your hand. Certainly do not clean your nasty hand off on the railings or seats!

Nobody else wants to hear your rap music. I hate having to listen to other people's music. I do not understand why people that listen to rap music seem to have to play it as loud as possible. Please turn the volume on your music down.

Move! If you are blocking the way of other passengers trying to get on the bus please move. Either go to the back of the bus or move to the side so others can get on the bus.

Elders > youngsters Older citizens and people with disabilities should always get seats. If you are healthy and young or relatively young there is no reason you can not give up your seat.

Children > adults Small children and pregnant woman should also always be given seats.

Bubble space. Public transportation vehicles are small. There is no reason to have your legs so far open that the person next to you cannot sit on the seat. Also get a full night's sleep. Leaning on someone as you are falling asleep is very annoying.

I don't care about last night. Lower your voice when talking on the phone or to someone on the bus. I do not want to know about your relationship with Tony. Or any unsavory habits Mary has. Sit next to the person that you want to talk to so you do not have to shout your conversation.

Do I know you... I do not know why small spaces make people want to chat with you. Asking about the time, asking about what fragrance I use, or commenting on my outfit are fine. Telling me about your life story and how many children you have and how your job sinks is not good conversation.

Let me sign you up for parenting classes. All children need to be tamed. Children screaming, hopping seats, throwing objects, or kicking people is not acceptable. Unruly children make everyone's commute horrible.

Drop the drama at the door. The passengers on the bus do not need to be included in the fight between your boyfriend who is sitting two seats away from you. Riding the bus under the influence of anything that would make you obnoxious is also unwelcome. Keep those issues off the bus/subway/train.

Bodily functions are no one else's business. Loudly belching or farting are unpleasant in general public settings. They are unforgivable on public transportation systems.

It's okay to say you don't know. If someone asks if the vehicle will go to a specific destination it is okay to say you don't know. It is better to state your lack of knowledge of the area than lie and have the person miss their bus or get on the wrong bus.

Eyes to yourself. I am sure most of the world was told it is impolite to stare when they were a child. Nothing is more uncomfortable than someone staring. Bring a book, newspaper, magazine, or game to occupy your eyes while on the bus/subway/train. Otherwise look out the window or at the structure of the vehicle.

Hopefully I can one day find a house closer to work and then I will not have to deal with rush hour traffic or public transportation. Until then I have to bite my tongue and deal with the general public.

Accessory detox

Those that know me know that I rarely care for the accessory monsters that deco lolita has created. I have never been one for the brand plastic bow jewelry either. I find that simple decorations are more aesthetically pleasing than overly embellished eyesores. In the past some sweet lolita have told me I am on an accessory fast, in which I reply that they need to go on an accessory detox plan.

This is not to say that I do not wear rings, necklaces, earrings, or bracelets. I just do not wear 4 rings on each hand or a bracelet to match every color of my outfit. I respect the deco lolita style just like any of the other lolita styles. However I find that an excessive amount of accessories tends to draw attention away from the overall ensemble. I have attempted deco lolita in the past. While it was fun, I prefer simpler coordinations.

Lately I have been drawn to muted and pastel colored outfits and accessories. My most coveted accessories at the moment seem to be pearls and charm jewelery. Below is an adorable heart charm from Molly Brown which I am thinking about getting. She also has some charm jewelery covered in colored enamel. Which I did not know you could do.

Are you noticing that you are on an accessory binge? Want help to cut back? Here are some tips for you.

~ Pick one color from your outfit and accessorize around that color.
I find it interesting when lolitas accessorize around one of the least prominent colors in their outfit. It usually makes the details of the outfit stick out.

~ Wear a charm bracelet.
Then you can wear as many trinkets on your bracelet as you want. You can buy charms almost anywhere. I have noticed tea cups, bears, hearts, and bow charms in kiosk stands in malls. Also plenty of websites sell charms as well. Molly Brown sells jelly bean charms which might look cute with a print like AP's Jelly Jewelery and other sweet prints.

~ Wear general accessories.
I consider trinkets such as bows, tea cups, or crown pendants general accessories. Crosses and pearls also fall into this category. General accessories can go with any outfit, which means you do not need specific jewelry for each outfit. You can also wear general accessories when you are not dressed in lolita. Your jewelry box will thank you.

~ Wear an over the top accessory.
If none of the options above will work for you wear one over the top accessory. If you love to wear sweet prints buy an excessively sweet necklace. Ribbon Holic has great accessories for this option. Elaborate dark jeweled necklaces/chokers would be great for gothic lolita. But try to limit these attention seeking accessories to one per outfit.

~ Be crafty.
Turn beloved accessories into bag or phone charms. If you have more than one ring or pendant you cannot part with carry it in a different way. Pendants are easy to convert. Just add a strap attachment through the necklace loop. Sadly rings require the trinket to be removed from the ring base.

I hope this can help anyone trying to cut back on their accessory accumulation.

Someday My Prince Will Come

Feeling a little blue lately I decided to visit the bookstore. I roamed around for quite some time and could not find anything I wanted to read until I was about to leave. Right next to the exit was a curious book that begged to be picked up called "Someday My Prince Will Come."

This cute memoir is about a woman that gave up on ordinary before even being born. At the age of six she decided she was going to marry a prince of the British royal family, Peter Phillips. She continued to chase her dream raking up a massive amounts of debt and stress from escaping Colorado, going to expensive colleges, living in England, and trying to not get deported to achieve her dream. Refusing to join the real world and sometimes living on determination alone she finally met her prince. After meeting him, she realized he just like any other guy. She and her prince parted after a wonderful conversation to return to their own lives. Although not quite achieving her final goal she is happy with the choices she made.

I bought the hardback book which has 304 pages. It is a light read. You do not have worry too much about extensive, boring records from her college years, although she did have to live in a building that should have been a bomb shelter. Or drab stories about everyday life, but she does touch upon some of her low moments in England. The book also contains wonderful accounts of parties, trying to persuade her parents to enroll her in an English boarding school, and episodes of makeup stealing male roommates.

I really enjoyed this book. Having given up on being just ordinary a long time ago I was pleased Jerramy felt the same way. One of my favorite sentences appears when she complains about people asking her when she was going to grow up and join the real world. "Sometimes I think the 'real world' is just a phrase invented by adults to give credibility to the miserable live they've created for themselves." I agree. There is no point in being conventional if it is not in your heart to be so.

If that idea is too far fetched for you you can think of this book as a mild motivational book. Jerramy has many self inspiring, self-help quotes that helped her achieve her goals. One great quote is "Everyone, despite their circumstances, has the power to become the person they were meant to be, and the power to follow the dreams that dwell inside their heart. You just have to be brave and stay focused." As well as "...you eventually become what you think about most, but I was certain that you also attract what you think about most..." If you need a pick-me-up or just want to read about an odd woman that was determined to become a princess I would recommend this memoir.

7 must haves for Autumn

It's that time of the year again. The temperature is starting to drop to a more comfortable degree. The days are starting to get slightly shorter. The leaves are starting to change. And school bells have begun to ring. Autumn is here. Autumn and spring are my second favorite seasons. I am always eager to go shopping for these seasons.

For this season I believe there are seven important must haves in everyone's closet.

~ Boots - As it starts to get slightly cooler boots are great footwear. They will keep your feet and legs warm and protected from wind. Autumn in the North East can be unpredictable sometimes. Some days it can be sunny in the morning and then have cold rain in the evening. You will not have to worry what the weather will bring if you wear boots. Brand shop usually release their boot collections slightly later in the season. Innocent World has released three styles already. Stores such as * QutieLand *, Funky Little Shop, and Little Chili Lolita Shop sell lolita style boots all year long.

~ Bolero/shrug/cardigan - These are useful when it is windy or suddenly cool. Some buildings may still have the air conditioner running so a bolero will protect your arms from sudden climate changes. Cute boleros can be found anywhere from brand store to your local Forever 21 or H&M.

~ Cute jacket - Much like above. A jacket will of course give more protect. I usually search for a jacket at the beginning of the season otherwise when it comes time when one is essential all the cute jackets will be taken. Cute jackets can be found anywhere.

~ Tights - Tights will keep you warm on chilly days and can be cute accessories. Local stores in my area have bland, sheer tights. Webshops like We Love Colors™ and Sock Dreams carry an array of brightly colored and zany designed tights. A new website was brought to my attention, My Tights. They appear to carry colorful, as well as slightly toned-down, and normal tights but also adorable tights. My Tights also carries a brand called Wolford, but it only seems available in the UK. I did find two tights that would be perfect for himegyaru though.

~ Cute bag - I am the kind of girl that would rather carry every one of my books rather than have an ugly mountain climbing bookbag. If you are going to be using a bag all day long everyday why buy something that is not cute? Pink Candy and Coquettish Tiara are notorious for having adorable bags. If you cannot use a shipping service there are plenty of other totes and laptop bags that are adorable and available with a quick search on Google.

~ Cute scarf - Lightweight scarves are a great fashion accessories and will also keep your neck protected. Scarves can be found of course anywhere. I always tie my scarf into a bow. NOTE: If you plan to try that as well you need a thin scarf.

~ Long sleeve top - Be it a sweater or a long sleeve blouse. Be sure to have plenty of these as the weather gets colder. Again these can get found anywhere. Right now I am obsessed with white/pink/blue argyle sweaters and long bell sleeve blouses.

Adding a little lady in your day

In a world where manners appear to be dead and people act without care for others, I retaliated in my own way by becoming a lifestyle lolita/himegyaru. Rather than fitting into the mold society had created, I decided to live a life of cute and lady-like attributes.

When lolitas decide to start following the lifestyle pathway there was a few different ways to begin their life of cute. Some might start by collecting as many brand items as possible. Some might start by introducing small/cute accessories into their life. Other ladies might try loliable hobbies. Then there are others who first try to refine themselves before adding the lolita lifestyle into their lives. I chose the last path. I believe that when one is dressed up one should try act properly. Although if you are not lady-like to begin with people might think you are putting on an act. I have always felt that no matter what style your chose to follow we ladies should act lady-like.

Here are a few ideas I wrote down in my diary when I first started entering into the realm of the lifestylists.

- Practice proper posture
- Speak softly
- Write little poems
- Let your imagination have the best of you
- Grow up but never old
- Always remember 'Please' and 'Thank you'
- Make calling cards
- Buy an elegant card holder

Pet peeve #3: Better than thou

No matter which era you want to attribute your inspiration for lolita fashion to derive from, there was a class system. The royalty and upper classes could afford the expensive, finer materials and luxurious accessories. While the lower class could only afford mediocre materials and cheap, plain, or no accessories. Clothing was an easy indicator of what class you belonged in. Fashion has not changed much over the centuries. Some lolitas can afford or fit into brand items and others cannot. Thus creating a class system of popularity and elitism.

The pompous attitude disgusts the people that made the elitists popular and their reputation slowly disintegrates. There is no benefit in looking down on the people that made you popular, without them you would not be famous. However, brand is not the only thing that brings out elitist attitude. New members, style differences, and being popular on forums or in the blogosphere can also induce snobbish behaviors. No one likes a snob. But there are ways to tune down the attitude.

Accept others. New members are essential to fashion. The more customers a brand has the longer they are able to stay in business and the more pieces they will make. The increase in overseas lolitas has gained the attention from brands. Thus resulted in BABY stores in France and America and multiple shipping serices. New and younger members also inspire designers to bring new idea to our favorite fashion.

Use restraint. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. No matter how you feel about non-brand wears, plus sized lolita, or brand hoarders it would be best to keep it to yourself or your close friends. Some people are easily offended and might take your opinions as being haughty.

Try to be courteous. When someone asks for constructive criticism try to be polite. Offer helpful advice without any prejudice. If the person does not accept the advice simply do not offer any more help to him or her.

Help others become the best they can be. Some itas cannot become great lolitas without the advice and help of others. For itas to learn from their mistakes veteran lolitas should teach them how to fix their faux pas. The more knowledgeable a person is the less annoying they are and the less blunders they will make.

Talk to others. One of the main complaints people have about elitists is their refusal to speak with people lower than them. Just by being cordial to others you are less likely to be labeled a snob.

New phone

Those that follow my twitter know that my pink blackberry curve screen cracked a little while ago. Shortly after I changed my cellphone service to Sprint and bought an htc Hero. I love my new phone the only problem was it boring and bland, not very princessy.

I ordered a Miracle Rose charm kit and cream fuzzy ball from Strapya for my new baby. I also bought a clear case for my phone in case I want to change the design.

After almost 2 hours of planning where everything will be glued, an hour of gluing, and letting it dry over night my baby is decorated.

This was my first deco project. It was definitely more difficult than I thought it would be. But it was fun. (I wish I had more roses.) I think maybe I will buy some more clear cases so my phone can have different designs. I think I will buy the white and pink fuzzy balls when they are back in stock too.

Night at the Movies

I went to see The Sorcerer's Apprentice two Sundays ago with Brad and my good friend Angelica. It was really cute and funny. I am definitely buying this when it comes out on DVD. I would recommend to go see it. If you do go to see this movie make sure you stay for the extra scene after the credits.

I really liked that there was a recreation of the cleaning up scene from Fantasia. The music scene with the Telsa coils was another great part of the movie. Being a science nerd myself I enjoyed that the main character was one as well.

Sunday was a blast. Before going to the movies, Angelica and I went to the Eastern Market in D.C. in the morning. Afterward we went to the Arboretum and fed the koi fish. Sadly the park was closing not long after we arrived so we did not get to see the rest of the park or bonsai trees. There was a big school of koi fish at the end of the pond next to the food dispenser.

Feed us! Feed us!
When we had to leave the fish started following us along the edge of the pond. But they turned away about half way across the pond.

Lovely Fashion

While searching for boots I stumbled upon an amazing find, Lovely Fashion. This webshop is similar to yesstyle, only cheaper. Lovely Fashion sells shoes, bags, and a small amount of accessories. I don't know of the quality of their products, but I intend to find out. I also like that you can favorite items to find at a later date. Just thought I would share before bedtime.

Ring-around-the-rosie

I was recently window shopping and I noticed one of the local strip mall had added a 5 belºw. Everything is cheaply priced and sometime you can find the cutest accessories. I did not see anything I wanted to buy until I passed the registers. They had rose rings.

I like these little plastic rings. I have pink rose rings but I really wanted a white rose and a blue rose. 5 belºw had all of the rainbow colors along with white and black. I should go back and get a black rose.

These rings were $2.00 each. They are not the best roses, I wish the center bud was more open. But the rings were a steal. I mostly see these rings online for about $8.00 or more plus shipping. There is even a $20.00 white rose ring on etsy!

They are a nice size and don't collect dust and lint like clay rings. The ring is adjustable and glued on pretty well.

Greetings from Atlantic City

Yesterday was a beautiful day so my family and I left for the beach. We frequently go to Atlantic City throughout the spring and summer to enjoy the beach. I don't gamble, but I enjoy walking through Caesar's Palace. Out of all the hotel/casinos I definitely prefer Caesars. I would love to see what the Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas looks like.

Unfortunately the one time I decide to take pictures in Caesars they are going to have some Food Network event. There were posters throughout the lobby of the big FN stars. And they put a frying pan on Caesar's statue.

The beach was wonderful. It wasn't too hot and the wind was blowing. I opted to wear normal clothes because I planned to play in the ocean. The only issue was the sand. It was so hot it burned the soles of my feet! I had to put my wedge heels on to walk to the water. Walking in heels on the sand was interesting.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

I cannot believe Princessly Living is two years old today! When I started this blog I never thought I would still be doing this two years from then. I thank every one of my viewers for that. Thank you for visiting blog and for continuing to visit. Thank you for leaving comments and emails. And of course putting up with my experimental topic posts. This has been a fun two years. I plan to continue writing this blog for a long time and hope you will continue on the journey with me.

Live, Love, Laugh, and Dance

Recently I received a lovely e-mail from a plus sized newer lolita. She has admired the lolita fashion from many years, but has only gained the confidence to wear lolita in the past few months. She told me that she fears negative comments from other girls about her size and has only ever attended one meet-up. This girl touched my heart. She really loves lolita fashion, but is afraid to wear it because of negative criticism.

So many forums and community which are meant to encourage and connect us are being used to intimidate newer members and dispirit those that do not fit into the mold of popular lolita standards. Rather than helping each other become the best lolitas we can be, we spend our time damaging each other's self esteem and ego. Constructive criticisms are negative or the commenter will say nothing to help and then leave a nasty comment on another website.

Questions such as "Can X-sized/skinned girls be a lolita?" or "Can a boy be a lolita?" are in my opinion futile. Fashion is an interactive art form. A way to express yourself and your interests. No one asks others if they are qualified to paint paintings, make sculptures, or play video games, and take up golf. It should not matter what others think as long as you are enjoying your life. If you want to wear lolita, do so. No matter your size, color, or gender there are no reasons you should allow others to damper you spirits and make you afraid to express yourself.

Usually the whole size issue starts a heated debate with redundant and bitter comments. The 'Real women have curves' argument is moronic. Women come in all shapes and sizes. Exclaiming this phrase in the middle of a weight/size debate just makes the commenter a sizist themself. Twiggy is as much a woman as Mia Tyler. And Natalie Laughlin is not more of a woman than Miranda Kerr. Plus sized lolitas aren't disgusting. Queen latifah is not disgusting. Nor are Kathy Najimy, Christina Schmidt, or Mae West. We have to be selective with the styles we chose to wear and have to spend more time on our outfit, hair, and make-up, but we can still look cute. Most brand items might not fit us, but there are plenty of other options such as offbrand items, replicas, and custom tailored items. Know when attending meet-ups that you will be outshone but petite lolitas. But that should not prevent you from going or being afraid to go.

One way to combat negative stigma is by boosting your self-esteem. Shows such as What Not To Wear and How to Look Good Naked can give you a self-esteem boot and give clothing tips. The more you believe in yourself the less other people's negative opinions will affect you. Another issue to watch out is self hatred. Listening to enough negative comments one starts to believe what is said and begins to think up more negative comments about himself or herself. You need to be beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. And if you are still worried about weight start exercising and eating healthy. This will make you feel good and you will lose weight as well.

Wish upon a wish

Like many of the lifestyle lolitas I love wishes. I wish upon a star, make a wish as I blow out birthday candles, make a wish when I blow the seeds off a dandelions, and wish while throwing a handful of pennies into a wishing well.

My grandmother always told me that someone only grows old when they give up on wishes and dreams. Even when I was little I was determined to never grow old. I grew up in household which believed if you make positive and clear wishes you will get what you asked for. Another piece of wisdom from my grandmother was to always keep a wish box.

I have had a wish box since I was a child. I found this pretty container in a thrift store when I was about seven. I write my wishes down on decorative paper, fold them up, and store them in my wish box. Whenever I have a new wish I write it down and add it to my container. Once ever six months or so I read through all my wishes so see if any have come true. I have kept some of my old wishes still in my container just because they are adorable. Some of the wishes in my box are for other people as well.

You should always keep your wishes and dreams alive. I have a friend that keeps a wish journal. Every line is a wish and as they come true she crosses them off. I think a wish box is cuter though.

I had a pleasant surprise not long ago. I recently bought and watched a Taiwanese drama called Fated to Love You. The main character, Xin Yi, also keeps a wish box! She used post-its though. I was really surprised to see one of my family traditions in an Asian drama!

Raspberry delight

Although summer is my least favorite season, there are a few things I do enjoy. Fresh fruit, going to the beach, and cute clothes. Today the heat wave decided to subside so Brad's sister and I went outside and picked raspberries. We collected a huge soup mug full of ripe raspberries.

I cannot wait, in about a week there should be another ripe batch to be picked. Maybe we should make raspberry muffins. ❤

I want to be a princess too

Why I wear what I wear
I am sure everyone has encountered a time when they were asked why they wear lolita. Strangers will seek you out in a crowded area and approach you, neighbors might ask your family members, and children will ask you questions despite their parents trying to advert their attention to something else.

With spring semester over and my work schedule being weekend option only, I have more time to wear the fashion I love. Whenever I am out there is at least one person that would ask why do I wear why I wear. Most of the time I quickly say, "because I think this is cute" or "because this expresses me." But lately I've sat down and actually deliberated as to why I love this fashion so much.

Two of the sweetest instances which have made love this fashion even more have come from children. While on a trip to the aquarium with my family a little girl approached me dragging her father in toe behind her. She had on a T-shirt that said "Forget being a princess, I want to be a President." She wanted to shake my hand and take a picture with a princess. When she and her father walked away I heard her say, "Daddy, I want to be a princess too."

The second instance occurred recently at a Barnes & Noble. I felt I was being watched more than normal while I was searching for a new book. When I finally sat down to read my book I found out why. A little girl was peering at me from around a bookcase. As soon as I saw her she dashed away only to return shortly with a book. She held it out in front of her for me to take. At this her mother stopped talking to her friend and nervously said sorry as she pulled her daughter back over to where her friend stood. All the while the child finally spoke saying she wanted the princess to read her a story while she cried. I told the lady I didn't mind and she let her daughter go. When I was done with the book the little girl thanked me and gave a wobbly curtsy before happy bounding after her mother and telling the whole store the princess read her a book.

Whenever I am in a slump, receive negative comments from the normals, or have a 'why I am even doing this anymore' moment I remember the two above instances and it always puts a smile on my face.

Is that a moo moo?

The OTT sweet craze remains strong. After making Angelic Pretty its diabetes inducing headquarters and having turned BTSSB and Meta to the dark side it is now slowly trying to infect Innocent World. Searching through the brand stores today I noticed the OTT virus is attempting to land in Innocent World territory again. Innocent World has released other sweet prints, but has held out well from most of the OTT-like prints. I'm interested to see this brand's designs in the next year or so. The newest sweet print, Cherry Cat, is adorable but not too cavity inducing.

Two other items I noticed that seemed out of place on Innocent World's catalog was an Annette onepiece and a Gina jumperskirt. I understand the want to deviate has much as possible from OTT, but making shapeless masses for clothing is an interesting retaliation technique.

This dress is not too horrible. I have never liked the whole shirt dress trend though. This dress needs a cute belt or sash to break up the monotony. I do not see this dress as lolita though.

Gina jumperskirt

What is this ugly monstrosity? My first reaction was "Is that a brand moo moo?!" It looks like the designers forgot to put a waist in this jumperskirt. The front panel seems like it would fit better on a shirt. I guess if someone was pregnant this would be a good lolita jumperskirt. It would be interesting to see a maternity lolita brand.

Not so happy International Lolita Day

Karma will always have its revenge.

I must start this post that the International Lolita Day event was wonderful. The two panels I attended were charming. There were some adorable and beautifully dressed lolita and I was happy I went even under the circumstances. I enjoyed speaking to the few lolita that talked with me. Thank you everyone. ❤

I always work on the weekends so any meet-up or event I want to attend I have to request off or call out. I called out Friday night feigning illness and then Saturday I woke up to 100.4°F degree fever! I was determined to go to NYC, so I got ready despite a fever and the climbing humidity. Halfway through doing my hair I found out my curling iron had died, so no cute curls with my hime bouffant hairstyle.

The trip to NYC was alright even though something in the car ripped my stockings. We stopped for a quick wardrobe modification and then were back on the road. No traffic jams and fewer crazy drivers to deal with made for a quick ride northward. However, upon reaching NYC my driver and I quickly got lost. Manhattan was a maze of one way streets and blocked off streets for some open air street market. It took 40 minutes to navigate through this mess making me arrive some time about 2:10pm.

I was of course interested the most by the blogging panel. Unfortunately I arrived late after trying to navigate the maze and had to stand in the very back until the second panel.

I took a few picture of some lovely ladies and left. It was too humid in the building for me and I felt like my temperature was rising. When I returned home I went straight to bed. My fever was 102°F. I feel better now though, just weak.

International Lolita Day

It is that time of the year again. This Saturday is the biannual International Lolita Day. I did not know if I was going to do anything this year, until I saw Lolita Charm's Kinokuniya x International Lolita Day '10! entry.

The event runs from 2-5pm at Kinokuniya in NYC. There will be three discussion panels. I am really looking forward to attending the 2-3pm discussion by the authors of La Vida Frills, Lolita Charm, and Pretty Wonderland.

I hate working on the weekends. I always end up missing great events, so I am really happy to be attending this.

Anatego's Shop & Bibles

I was debating for a long while about buying the Ribbonolic rings from Anatego's Shop. Last year I bought a multitude of the cupcake rings and necklaces and hardly used them. Finally I decided that cute ribbons will always be useful and I bought all of the colors.

The mailman also delivered my Gothic & Lolita Bible vol. 36. I am glad that it seems the Bibles will be returning to a semi-regular schedule. According to vol. 36 the next issue is scheduled for August. Also the Bibles are being sold on Yesasia! Here is the link to the Gothic & Lolita Bibles. Both versions of the first issue are available along with the Hair and Make-up Bible and the Boudoir issue. It appears that vol. 2 and 34 are the only ones missing at the moment.

Here are pictures of recent deliveries. I really loved all of the ring colors.

Here is an example of the ribbon's size. Of course my packages were delivered immediately after I took my nail polish off!

The bows appear to be made out of a sturdy clay and glued to a silver adjustable ring. You can tell they are handmade because some of the bows are slightly bigger than other ones. The clay is not sticky so no worries about the rings collecting hair and dust.

After I ordered my rings I received an e-mail with an estimation of when I should expect my package to arrive. My package did indeed arrive during the estimated time. The rings were in plastic packages and wrapped in bubblewrap. The only issue I had was one of the bows had separated from it's silver ring base, but it was easily glued back together. I am pleased with the products and the service.

Steampunk Fair

Last weekend was the three day World Steampunk Fair in Piscataway, New Jersey. This was my first period convention besides a Renaissance Fair I attended two years ago in Maryland. I did not know much about the Steampunk subculture so I entered the fair for a vague idea of what to expect. I was packed, excited, and ready to jump into yesterday's future.

The hotel room was lovely. I was glad I managed to book a room before they were full. The Fair was wonderful. There were events and competitions I wanted to attend each day. I had purchased tickets to the Cup of Brown Joy Tea Party and Lovecraft’s Revenge Interactive Dinner Theatre: two of the more exclusive events for the weekend.

Friday
Set out day! It was a beautiful morning. Slightly cloud but warm and sunny.
Brad and I unfortunately set out a little later than we wanted to. Then New Jersey and Google maps had a disagreement. We got lost in what I could guess was Morrisville. When we finally arrived at the Radisson Hotel the tea party had sadly already begun. We spent the evening at dinner and wandering through the shops on the bottom floor of the hotel. Then befriended a hilarious character named Micah and the performers of the Street Circus. We ment up with Angelica, my lolita friend ❤! We all sat down for a few drinks and joked until it was time for The Queen of Steam drag competition.

Afterward Brad, Angelica, and I went to the courtyard for the Band of Thieves and Mr. E performances which were before the Street Circus. The fire performances were amazing. One woman had a giant hula hoop ring with lit spokes. I would be too afraid of setting my hair on fire to try that. We watched the antics of the Street Circus and afterward turned in for the night.

Saturday
Room service!

For the second day Brad, Angelica, and I went to a discussion group: Steampunk and Social Issues. It was rather informative. The only horrible thing was the fact there was no air conditioning in that room and I was wearing a corset. Afterward Angelica left for an Asian Ball-Jointed Doll Meetup and we continued shopping. Later Brad and I caught a few bands playing in the courtyard.

Later than evening was the Interactive Dinner Theatre, which wasn't what I was expecting but hilarious! We were given slips from Lovecraft’s book and instructed to act a certain way. Brad got to act as Satan, perfect! My instructions were to act like an alien, not as much fun. The story was that Lovecraft was supposedly brutally killed in his hotel room. The murderer had then released spores in the ventilation system which were driving everyone mad. Our new friend Micah was to act like someone with an intelligence inferior to a three year old. He played the part extremely well.

Afterward Brad and I rejoined Angelica for the cabaret. We went to see the Band of Thieves/Mr. E/Street Circus again. This time we got to see sword walking and fire juggling along with some of the same skits from the Friday show. Then it was time for Voltaire!

After Voltaire's concert, my companions and I ran back over to the cabaret for a short while. We then danced a bit at the Big Brass Ball and went to bed.

Sunday
The last day... After packing and checking out, Brad and I went down to breakfast. We were still exhausted from yesterday, so we did not plan on attending much before leaving. We tagged along while Angelica shopped. Then shared a few of the most delicious truffles I had ever tasted while waiting to see what video games were going to be available to play. We left shortly after arriving and went to the Mad Science Competition. I participated in a hugging experiment and received a lovely complimentary restraining order.

Upon leaving the competition we saw a neat display of reconstructed and decorated bicycles. Then finally we left for home.

It was an eventful and wonderful weekend. There were so many lovely outfits, bands, and performances. Brad and I plan to attend next year. I think the only down point was that most of the shops seemed to have an very Renaissance Fair feel. I talked to a few of the patrons and they confirmed that they work at the local Renaissance Fairs. Oh well. Despite checking out all the shops, I only bought two things. I'm a picky shopper.

Pet peeve #2: Cleaniness

Plan ahead! When you take pictures we can see more than just you. If you are going to take pictures make sure everything will look nice. The clutter in the corner of your bedroom or living is not aesthetically pleasing.

A true lady would never live in a cluttered, disorganized mess. If one did live that way they would not tell or show everyone their cluttered house. You do not need to have a recently shampooed rug with lovely Victorian style furniture in the background. Simply pushing the mess out of the picture range will do. Or even better, put items back where they belong. Then you do not have to worry about clutter piles in your pictures.

A cluttered house reflects badly on you. It makes others wonder how you take care of your lovely clothing. Then if you try to sell your clothes, buyers might be hesitant to purchase from you.

Winterthur Estate

For those that used to follow The Princess Portal you know that May 5th is International Princess Day. This is another self made holiday to celebrate your princessly self. This is a day to pamper yourself or do something that makes you feel like a princess.

For my Princess Day I decided I wanted to go on a tour of Winterthur Estate. Since I was unable to go to Point-to-Point this year. I enjoyed my morning by just lounging and appreciating a day without a need to rush around and without school work.

Then I experimented with the himegyaru hair style, which sadly deflated as the day continued and through the constructing and moving of my mirror. I think next time I will use Violet LeBeaux's himegyaru tutorial idea of putting something under the bump to keep the shape.

Winterthur was amazing. The garden was also lovely, but since I recently went to Longwood Garden I was really only interested in a tour of the mansion. Here are some of the rooms of the 175+ room mansion we were allowed to see. Sadly most of my pictures came out blurry because I had my camera set to take outdoor pictures. The other photos are available to view on my flickr.

I had a great time and the day got even better. I returned home just in time before a large deliver trunk left my driveway. My mirror had arrived! Brad and I constructed the mirror, rearranged the furniture, and set it in the corner of the room. I was extremely happy it arrived because I was unhappy of the pictures of myself throughout the tour.

Mirror, mirror

I finally cracked down not long ago and decided I needed a new mirror. Since our move to Delaware I have had only the bathroom mirrors and a small make-up vanity mirror from IKEA to use. I loathe getting dressed up without a full length mirror to compare my outfit to the image I had in my mind.

Most of my furniture is a dark Mahogany or warm Maple colored so I had a nice selection of mirrors. I bought this for only $586. The wonderful delivery men carried the heavy thing into the house for me for no extra charge. Then I had the fun of putting it together, my fiancé helped (did most of the heavy work... ❤).

Thus with the new addition to my room I can include outfit pictures.

My newest bag!

With all of the cream and pastel clothing I was buying for spring I needed a new purse. I had wanted to buy someone from the Taobao website from a while and then I noticed an adorable purse on eBay from a TaoBao shop. Unfortunately, once I order the purse it was sold out. The middleman said the Taobao seller would give me any purse from his shop for the same price! I had never seen a cream and brown polka-dot design so I choice that one. I was really please with both the Taobao seller and the poor eBay middleman that was forced to act as translator.

It is adorable and well made. The purse is actually bigger than I originally thought it was going to be, but not too large. There are no funny marks or split ends. I am very pleased with the product.

Lolita and mass media

I become apprehensive but giddy every time I am informed that one of my favorite fashions will be worn by celebrities or acknowledged on television, in magazines, or in news articles. With lolita fashion being mentioned on Bones and other television shows, and celebrities wearing and visiting brand shops the world is slowly becoming more exposed to our favorite fashion. With each exposure I hope we might not receive such blank stares when we are out in our fineries for the day. However, it is still up to the actual lolitas to show the world how to wear the fashion and how to act appropriately.

One of the questions frequently asked on egl is: Do you fear lolita becoming mainstream? Not really. Every time the slightest mention of lolita appears in the media this question is posed. Modern fashion trends are in a completely different direction from lolita. Current American fashion is about wearing tight outfits and showing as much cleavage and leg as possible. Gyaru fashion would appeal more to America than lolita fashion would. For lolita to become mainstream celebrities would have to frequently wear it and I don't foresee modern celebrities making such a drastic change. It would probably take a group of lolitas becoming celebrities for anything big to happen. (It would make for an interesting reality show.)

This post was of course brought about by Jessica Simpson's Price of Beauty Japan episode. Most reviewers said they were shocked by Jessica's utter disrespect for the Japanese culture and lolita culture, however I was not. I expected nothing worse from her and her group of friends. Just like other lolitas I was displeased with the lack of mention to Maki and Asuka along with the generalized labeling of lolita as Harajuku girls. If a host is visiting a brand shop and wearing one of their outfits on a runway they should inform their viewers about the shop and designers.

Although brief, I was pleased that actual lolitas were shown on The Price of Beauty. I was also please she went to Angelic Pretty unlike G4's Attack of the Show hosts that went to Bodyline. Olivia Munn tried on the worst brown outfit, then tried on a biker jacket with a pink petticoat, and finally a maid outfit. While the Price of Beauty was horrible, I feel it was slightly than G4's minimal mention of lolita fashion.

Common courtesy

I believe a princess can be identified by her manners. I also believe that every lolita or himegyaru services as a representative for our favorite fashions. I am the sort of lolita that feels when one is dressed up one should be courteous and polite.

Even if you don't feel the same there are at least a few common courtesies that should be mandatory while being dressed up. By this I in no way mean you have to be overly polite, eat with the correct fork, or walk with an etiquette guide in your purse.

-Do not let your skirt hog the seats on public transportation. Even though most people will generally sit as far away from you as possible. If someone needs a seat try to tame your poof.

-Be careful of tables. I am at the height where if my skirts is not monitored it will try to knock items off the edge of tables.

-Kneel to pick up fallen items. Nothing is more impolite and embarrassing than a bloomer shoot in public. Or you could always have your beau pick items up for you.

-Keep your accessories in one location. Lolita and himegyaru fashions tend to have an abundance of extra articles -purse, hat, gloves -. It is best to not clutter areas with your stuff. Put your parasol on the rear of your chair, gloves in your bag, bag on your lap or rear your chair, and hat on your bag. This of course can be trickier to manage in winter with bulkier items.

Pet peeves

Everyone has them. These are little actions, phrases, or tendencies that set people into a rage. The lolita community seems to have a collection of pet peeves that will get you labeled an ita. These can be frivolous, tedious things like a skirt being an inch too short or rather large no-nos such as wearing anime cosplay accessories - chobit or cat ears.

Pet peeve #1: Climbing buildings

This also includes railings, fences, walls or any such structural surfaces. We have all seen group pictures where at least one or two people are attempting to scale walls as if they were Spiderman. You aren't. Whether you are trying to portray a doll, Victorian child, look sweet, or be elegant this action describes none of them.

I am sure mothers or governesses of upper class Victorian child would never permit them to do this. And if it did happen I am sure punishment was issued as soon as they returned home. No mother would allow their well dressed child to act like a uncivilized street urchin.

Also why would you possibly damage or scruff such expensive clothes or something that you or a seamstress labored to make?

The Pink Rose

A Place For Me And You

While I will openly admit that Shimotsuma Monogatari is not my favorite movie. I do agree with Momoko on a few select topics. One thing I relate to Momoko with is having a physical place to escape to where you feel welcome and comfortable. (Much like Cheers! Where everyone knows your name.) Momoko had The Aristocratic Forest cafe. She even had Ichigo join/follow her on one occasion.

I had a tea house I frequented on occasion in Philadelphia, The Pink Rose. I loved the pastries and the interior design. The staff was always polite as well. I would visit the shop both in lolita and normal clothes. They were never rude when I was dress up and actually gave compliments. I always felt welcome when I would walk in. The Pink Rose was in no way a high-end pastry shop, but it was cute.

Sadly when I traveled to Philly yesterday to visit my favorite pastry shop I saw it was no longer there! The Pink Rose is no called Philly Sweettooth. My home sweet home is now a candy store. Saddened I trudged back to the Septa train station and made my way back to Delaware. Now I am on a search from a new tea house.

I read this poem in one of my literature classes last year and felt it would be wonderful to share. Lolita and gyaru fashion participants, and woman in general, receive a plethora of negative criticism from those around them and from themselves. "I'm not pretty enough", "My waist/bust is too huge/small", "You've too big", and "That style would look better on a lighter skin toned person" are some examples I've seen/heard when girls ask for critiques.

I feel that every lady is beautiful. By lady, I mean those girls that truly try to represent a fashion to its fullest. Much like the second line, "I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size", as a 6 foot tall, curvy, caramel-toned woman I fit none of the typical or desired traits of a lolita or himegyaru. However, I try my best to portray and honor the fashions I love. I am phenomenal because I display confidence, love how I look, and who I am.

Everyone has something that makes them phenomenal. Have you found your's?

Ribbon Bangle

This is a new trial sections. I sat for a while and thought of something new I could incorporate into Princessly Living. Then I remember the plethora of feedback the To offbrand or not to offbrand column received.

In the mentioned article I said that the use of offbrand items adds an uniqueness to your outfit that cannot be achieved with using brand only items. However, this section will not be about the uniqueness offbrand items can provide it will be about how similar offbrand and magazine featured items can be. Similar to 'Must Have' articles in some magazines.

The Scooter Store

I was going to avoid the topic of age since every lolita blog has discussed this at one time or another. That was until I checked my mail this morning and found a letter addressed to me announcing I was approved for a scooter for The Scooter Store.

I suppose in terms of lolita age ranges I'm near scooter store eligibility. But over the years that was been changing. The frequent age polls and 'Am I too old' topics show that the majority of our population is slightly older.

At nearly 25, I do not feel too old to be dressing as I do. I have no illusion that I will be dressing in lolita for eternity. However, I do not see in the near future any reason to stopping doing so either. While I avoid the rapid OTT sweet trend and animal bags I still consider myself a sweet lolita. I have noticed as I get older I am more influenced by classic lolita, himegyaru, himekaji, and vintage styles. My wardrobe tends of form a weird middle between those fashions.

I believe that as long as you're happy, wear whatever subculture you like. Of course the topic of beauty also plays a part. If your hair is graying and you have the wrinkles of a 70 year old woman you are naturally going to be shunned from wearing sweet lolita. So you should aim for age appropriate styles or toning down the sweet volume. Caro-chan, the author of F*** Yeah Lolita, wrote a good article on "Dressing more mature in lolita"

When you are feeling down about your age remember:
You're only as old as you let yourself feel. If you are in your 30s, but still have the looks and spunk of someone in their 20s there is no reason to stop dressing in the sweeter styles.

If you are enjoying yourself, dress as you like. This of course follows my thoughts of never telling anyone dictate what you wear or how you feel. Be yourself.

You only get to live once. Explore, do, wear all that you can. Have fun or you might regret it later!

Models have ages too. Ever sat down and thought about how old some of the models are? My favorite model, Aoki Misako, is 25. Here is a picture of her from Fruits September 2001. Listed as age 17. Thus making her 25 now.

Side project?

I was wondering if KERA was planning something special for the Gothic & Lolita Bibles since an issue for 2010 had not been announced yet. They were! Aoki Misako recently made a blog entry about a photoshoot she was modeling for and a new Gothic & Lolita Bible book! It's titled Ensemble vol. 1.

So I wonder as to why this is titled separately from the usual Bibles, not incorporated in the Gothic & Lolita Bible Extras, or the single Boudoir issue.

Unfortunately the information for this issue is not up on the Kera website yet. I can only speculate that the issue will be released on February 27th for the Gothic & Lolita Bible Ensemble Event Sale. Hopefully it will be available to online book stores that carry the other issues as well.

Lonely lolita

And then there was one...

I've seen others complain about this issue, which I sometimes struggle with as well. I know feeling lonely has led a few lolitas to leave the fashion or not attempt to wear the fashion outside the comfort of their homes. But all is not lost.

Being the only lolita/himegyaru in your town or even state is not as horrible as it can seem though. Of course being one of the few oddly dressed individuals that your community has might have seem like a dampening thought, but do not be discouraged.

Besides, my thoughts are that true lolitas and gyraus dress up to express who they actually are and what they love, not to show off to get approval from others. Because honestly, being a deviant from society will get you more cynical comments than positive ones.

While it is well known that people react negatively to something they do not understand. Even the well seasoned lolitas and gyarus have gotten negative sigma from the normal people. I find that venting with fellow lolitas about "the normals", as I call them, helps after receiving snide comments.

When feeling lonely makes you feel blue try to remember a few things.

Are you truly alone?
- How in fact do you know your the only one that dresses like this? There might be others that are too afraid to dress up by themselves as well. You can be an inspiration to other shy lolitas.

Maybe you can be a mentor.
- Individuals in your community might be unaware of the lolita/gyrau fashions. You might introduce others to your favorite fashions. Communities sometimes start from one person.

Be yourself!
- Never let others rain on your parade. No matter how weird "the normals" think your interests are, enjoy them. Your unique interests make you who you are.

Join a community, become e-mail pals, or go to meet-ups in the next state. Remember, you are never truly alone.

Winter

For those that do not know Groundhog Day was yesterday. I am originally from Pennsylvania so this weird little holiday and Punxsutawney Phil are a tradition in my family.

For one day every year Phil gets to be a celebrity. My family awaits to hear the fateful news if he saw his shadow or not. Unfortunately, this year Phil saw his shadow and hide back into his hole. As the tradition states, the United States will have 6 more weeks of winter.

The little guy was correct this year. Last night it snowed, not much though. Plus, it is supposed to snow over the weekend as well. I love waking up to snow covered trees! It was so beautiful I attempted to take some pictures with my phone. However, the pictures truly do the scene at my school campus no justice.

I love winter. ❤

School has definitely kept me on a short leash and very busy so far this semester. I only have four classes, but it definitely feels like I signed up for a full schedule. I am slightly ahead now so I can relax a little.

On Wednesday, being adventurous I went and helped my friend out with one of her school projects. She's an art major at Del Tech. and she needed a model, so I volunteered.

She told me to look as plain as possible. So I wore no make-up and straightened my hair. When we started the photoshoot she tied my hair back in a ponytail. (If I would have known that I would not have woken up early to straightened it.) I brought only plain white and cream skirts. She was ecstatic the whole time and apparently received an excellent grade the next day. I'm glad I could help her.

Christmas

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! This year I received a few presents from my family: a rhinestone bow necklace, and a rhinestone bow bracelet, and a cardigan.

But my greatest gift came from my fiancé.

He gave me a second engagement ring! I'm so happy!

My first engagement ring was a plain claddagh. I love both of my rings though. I think I might wear my claddagh ring on a necklace.

We Love Colors

With temperatures starting to drop below 35°F and colder temperature still to come, socks are no longer sufficient.

Last year, I had only been successful in finding the standard white, black, navy, tan, and maroon colored tights. But this year, I was determined to find a wide verity of colors!

Coats

So far I have been using a normal store-bought winter coat. But lately, I have been wanting a sweet lolita/hime style winter coat. Having been unsuccessful at finding anything close to what I want in stores I have finally turned to brands.

I must say the brand I least expected to produce a simple coat has made what I feel is so far the best looking design for a coat this season.

It's that time of year again! Christmas lists, shopping frenzies, and card sending. This year I participated in a local lolita community.

Sadly, right as the deadline date approached I became swamped with class projects, tests, and a final. I will mail my card tomorrow morning, hopefully it arrives on time.

All of the stickers are 3D except the white snowflakes. I took 2 sets of pictures so the white glittery stickers and small pearly beads are visible Plus, I think the gold accents of some of the stickers looks better in the first set.

I was happily assigned my friend so I did not have to think too long of what to put in my card. She likes the steampunk lolita fashion so I found some gear trinkets and then I saw two cute charms to add as well.

Not feeling it

Everyone has those days, weeks, or months when you are just not feeling in the mood to do anything much less dress up. You search for the most comfortable pair of jeans, put on a plain T-shirt, tie you hair in a bun, and find the biggest pair of sunglasses to hide your face. It can be caused by weather, stressers, changes in season, or any number of issues in life.

I was previously in one of these phases.. I like to wear lolita, casual princess-style, or princess-style clothes as much as possible, but every once in awhile a break is warranted. It breaks the monotony of my wardrobe and gives me an opportunity to explore new fashions. No matter what some people may say, I believe that the clothes do not make a lolita. Even if I am in the grungiest of clothes and covered in mud I am still a princess.

During these times of grunginess there are generally two options:
1.) Force yourself to dress up
2.) Take a reprieve

I tend to avoid option number one. I believe dressing up should be an activity to take pleasure in and look forward to, not dreaded as if it were a chore. Forcing yourself to dress up might result in a decline in interest of the fashion you used to love.

Taking a reprieve can sometimes allow one to expand their wardrobe. In the case of myself, I find that taking a break from dressing up allows me to rediscover my love for the fashion. It also allows me to sit down and decide if the item(s) I am currently coveting are truly something I want to buy or an impulse purchase.

Take a reprieve, explore new fashion ventures, and when you return to the fashion you're taking a break from rediscover your love for it. And always remember look for the best in every situation and enjoy everyday to the fullest!

Sweet Cake Shoe Replica

As promised, here is my pair of Sweet Cake Shoe replicas from Coser Dream.

You can definitely tell the difference between this replica and the Angelic Pretty original. But they are consistent with the stock imagine from their auction page.

Coser Dream was wonderful. I gave them the size of the shoe I wanted but to make sure that my shoes fit they asked me for a measurement of my feet. It took about 3 weeks for my shoes to arrive. The box was slightly dented in a corner but there was no damaged to the shoes.

My shoes fit perfectly! I wore them all day Saturday to the VGXPO and had no foot pain. I would recommend giving a centimeter or so extra when you order this shoe style for the purpose of the longer Velcro straps. Every once in awhile the strap across my foot would un-Velcro if I flexed my foot too quickly.

Small scuffs are easily rubbed off the material. The bows appear to be glued on, but are rather well attached. The Velcro is sewn on well. The soles of the shoes have a slightly gripping rubber which I was thankful for because the show room at the VGXPO was not carpeted. The white scalloped material is very soft so no worries about them scratching your tights. The wedge soles of the shoes are hard so if you plan on wearing the shoes repeatedly for long periods of time a cushioned insole is recommended.

The available colors for these replicas are White/Cream/Pink/Orange/Red/Wine Red/Gold/Silver/Blue/Black. Until I am able to find a better looking replica I plan on order a few more pairs of these shoes.

姫☆Style

I have recently became aware of a new magazine tailored toward the hime-kei fashion. I love collecting various other lolita and gyaru fashion magazines, so when I found out about Hime☆Style I ordered it right away! I purchased the three issues available on amazon.co.jp at the time. Sadly the August issue went out of print while I was waiting for shipment and now all the past issues seem to have gone out of print as well.

I waited excitedly for my package to arrive. However, upon opening it I was a little discouraged at how thin the books were. The July/09 issue is 98pgs and Oct/09 issue is only 96pgs. But I know new magazines are not going to have tons of features during the first issues.

These are in essence a smaller version of the ageha magazines. The street snap section dominates the front of the books. There are tiny sections on the deco items and nail designs. Hime☆Style features a few pages of hair styling, brand modeling, quizzes, music recommendations and model recommendations. Images of the model's blogs, purikara, the model's free time activities, and picture outtakes are featured in both issues as well. And of course the typical ageha plastic surgery before and after ads dominate the final pages.

(I so plan on typing Kyumi's curly pigtails.)

The weirdest section I must say is the model recommendation for cosmetic beauty clinics along with the pictures of their false eyelash attachments, botox injections, tattoo removal, and art makeup (which by the look of the machine in the photo appears to be cosmetic tattooing).

The street snaps are a mixture of styles. I've seen himegyaru, hime casual, and plain casual clothes.

Hime☆Style is an okay magazine. I plan to buy the future issues, but it will in no way deter me from buying more ageha. I hope the future issues will have more brand modeling since these two issues have nearly none at all.

I am going to need to use an additional shelf soon.

Heart floor cushion

Some family members should be avoided at all cost. But that is not the focus of this entry so I will get to that in a moment.

For my first craft project I decided to post my heart floor cushion.

This project started out with a water main break in my house. Which led to a collapsed waterlogged ceiling destroying a majority of the furniture in my room including my computer desk. I went on a search for a new desk but could not find any I liked. Being thrifty I thought the old butler's table from the foyer would make a cute desk. It works well and does not overpower my room. The only problem was I had to sit on the floor.

This new problem sent me on another quest: a floor cushion. I knew what I wanted, a blue heart, but I couldn't find a store that made that shape or color combination. This is where my family member comes into the picture.

My aunt having discovered her new ecological conservationist roots bought me three cushions from her couch she was going to get rid of.

- "Recycling these will help the environment!", she told me.
- I pointed out to her that not throwing away her couch because she wanted a new one would also help the environment. She ignored my wonderful advice while throwing the cushions in my room and running off to the nearest furniture store. (I need to stop before I get on a tangent.)

Now left with these three disgraces to the environment and my own devices, I began my work.

1. I cut half of the cushions down the middle and toward the ends making sure not the cut through the folds I had created.

2. I basted the cushions together to keep them in place. Then I drew the outline of the heart I wanted.

3. I then cut the heart out. ❤

5. Measuring the heart, I cut out the fabric pattern. (The fabric is "Soft & Comfy" and is actually a light sky blue color.)

6. Then I sewed the fabric together, put it on the cushion form, and sewed the pillow closed.

Ta-da! Now I have a wonderful "environment-saving" floor cushion which is very comfortable.

The only problem now is my cats like to steal it while I'm not looking.

I have been wanting to include a poetry column for quite some time now, but have been unable to decide how to start it. After thinking about it I decided the poem "The Road Not Taken" fit well.

A traveler comes to a split in a path (of life). Though both paths are the equally the same he decides to take the path which appears to be less traveled thinking that one day he can come back and take the other path. But then acknowledges that he will never come back to that impasse again. The last stanza is for the reader to interpret for himself or herself. I interpret the last stanza as in the future the traveler will sigh and look back deciding if he made the correct decision. But he knows there is a difference in his life that would not have been if he took the other path.

The poem makes me look back to the time when I decided to be different from the individuals around me. I took the road less traveled and decided to dress in lolita. With a sigh, I look back at my decision and know it has definitely lead to a difference in my life than if I had chosen "the road not taken".
